Albert Schweitzer

Albert Schweitzer is over 50 when his life's work, a charitable hospital in Lambarene, is in danger because the local government is squeezing too much money from the project. So Schweitzer travels to the US to raise funds, but comes under the scrutiny of Senator McCarthy for agreeing with Einstein on the dangers of the atomic bomb. Schweitzer, the bilingual Alsatian with a French passport, makes a good role model but a less than fascinating movie protagonist, because his work was not limited to Africa, he also wrote many scientific and popular books. This German-American production oddly has all characters speaking English, with only a dubbed version available for the German market.

The mission: to take over his dead scientist brother's work for a consortium to extract from a faraway planet a mineral that would fix the energy crisis on Earth. Jake's assignment is to infiltrate the inhabitants of this planet, the Na'vi, using his brother's avatar, which will allow him to virtually investigate the unknown iridescent planet. Once there, all goes according to plan until Jake falls for one of the alien creatures... In the tradition of classics that defend the cause of Indians against the White Man - "Dances with Wolves", "The Emerald Forest", "Little Big Man", "A Man Called Horse" and "The New World" - James Cameron retreads this old chestnut with his hero taking the side of the noble and peace-loving aliens, as he turns his back on his greedy and warring compatriots. At the same time, Cameron makes the case for love-not-war and saving the planet, and does it all with stupendous action scenes, a vibrant story and special effects that blow those of Steven Spielberg (in "Jurassic Park") and George Lucas (in the "Star Wars" saga) completely out of the water.

Spray-on shoes, flying rats, a monkey-thought translator: the inventions of young idealist Flint have, in the past, drawn anger rather than admiration from his fellow citizens, who live off sardine fishing on a small island in the Atlantic Ocean. One day, Flint conceives a machine that can turn water into food. Catapulted into the clouds after a wrongful handling, the said device begins to recycle rainwater, transforming even the slightest rainfall into cloudbursts of hamburgers, pancakes, ice creams or pizzas. Becoming a true hero in the eyes of the local population - who, sick of having to eat, day in and day out and since time immemorial, all manners of sardine recipes, finally have an opportunity to taste something else - Flint is then talked by the bulimic and power-hungry mayor into pushing the machine beyond safety limits, in the hopes of attracting the whole world's attention, and thus as many tourists as possible. However, Flint's machine, on overrun, causes a worldwide meteorological and gastronomic catastrophe. Unsavory animated 3D feature film adapted from an 80's children's book, intended mainly for two categories of viewers: those with a strong stomach and those about to begin a strict diet.

Jerry Cotton is the FBI's finest in their New York office. The man has closed every case except one: a gold robbery done by gangster Sammy Serrano. When Sammy is found dead in his apartment and Cotton is later found at another crime scene with a compromising file, the former FBI star is suspected of double murder. His only hope now is a mysterious beauty and his dunce of a sidekick Phil Decker. Jerry Cotton is visually splendid but only slightly funny and thrilling, an action flick based on a pulp series that probably doesn't interest today's generation. Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief

A dyslexic New York teen with ADHD named Percy lives in near poverty with his mother and a fat pig of a stepfather. On a school trip to the museum to study Greek mythology, he is suddenly attacked by a fury and accused of stealing Zeus' lightning bolt. Confused, he turns to his wheelchair-bound teacher, who tells him he's really the son of Poseidon. What's more, his handicapped best friend is actually a satyr (half man, half goat) and his teacher is a centaur. Percy is told he must find the stolen lightening bolt to save both his mother and the world, and is taken to a demi-god training camp. There he meets the daughter of Athena, who joins him and the satyr in the quest for the lightening bolt. The movie's inspiration is already clear from the title: a ridiculous rip-off of the Harry Potter series that falls far, far off the mark, and tries to use very brief cameos by A and B-list stars (Uma Thurman, Sean Bean, Rosario Dawson) to lure audiences to the theater.

Pettson & Findus - Glömligheter

A storm is on the way and a patient who is considered dangerous has disappeared. Once there, the staff seem to be doing everything they can to impede his investigations... Lavish and excellent thriller directed by Martin Scorsese, with two caveats: although this is one of better movies of the past few years, it comes nowhere near Scorsese's masterpieces (Taxi Driver, Casino, Goodfellas, Raging Bull); and Gone Baby Gone, directed by Ben Affleck remains the best adaptation of a Dennis Lehane novel - better than Clint Eastwood's Mystic River or now Shutter Island, with its many references to Alfred Hitchcock.

Fatih Akin¹s energetic comedy is passionately directed and performed, but unfortunately remains somewhat superficial.
