Questions about the Local Search

What does "Local Search" mean?

Enter a search expression into the Search field, for example "Restaurant", and local.ch will provide you with a list of all restaurants in your vicinity. There is no need to enter a location.

The Local Search does not work for me. What can I do? What do I have to take into account for the Local Search to function?

The preconditions for a functional Local Search are as follows:

  • The Local Search must be activated. As standard, the Local Search is already activated. You can activate or deactivate this on any Search and Result page of the local.ch iPhone program.
  • Location Services must be activated in Settings. Your momentary location is determined through the Location Services. As standard, the Location Services on your iPhone are already activated. It is possible that, when using the local.ch iPhone program, you may be asked whether local.ch may use your location. Please confirm this with "Yes", so that the Local Search will function. If necessary, you can check the status in "Settings" -> "General" -> "Location Services".   • Your iPhone must be able to make contact with the Location Services. It can happen that the connection cannot be picked up in buildings. Simply change your location and try again.
  • An Internet connection.

If you are outside Switzerland, it is possible that the Local Search is deactivated. Please read further under the question "Can I also search without Local Search?" to find out how you can nevertheless still use the local iPhone program.

Can I also start a search without a Local Search?

Of course. In fact, you have a number of possibilities for doing this as well:
The simplest method is to deactivate the Local Search, which can be carried out any Search and Result page. The switch is located under the Search box, or at the end of the Result list. After deactivating, you can formulate your search, for example, as follows: "Restaurant Basle" or "Fritz Meier Zurich".
• You can also search in a specific area with the Local Search activated by supplementing your search expression with "... in example location". For example: You are in Basle and would like to search for a restaurant in Zurich. Enter "Restaurant in Zurich" and tap on "Search" below on the right.

Can I still use the local.ch iPhone program even when I'm outside Switzerland?

Of course. Please also read the answer to "Can I also search without Local Search?".

Why are the result lists sometimes incomplete during Local Search?

It could happen, for example, that there is no restaurant of your favourite type just around the corner. Unfortunately, there is not always enough geographical information for all the entries to enable us to display them in a Local Search. You can help us to improve this situation, however: To do this, please read the answer to "The entry is not displayed on the map, or is incorrectly displayed".

Questions regarding 1811

I find the 1811 number in the Result list annoying! What can I do?

  1. Open "Settings" on the Home Screen of your iPhone.
  2. Select the "Phonebook" menu.
  3. Activate ( I ) or deactivate ( o ) "Display 1811" as required.

What is the point of having the 1811 number in the Result List?

If local.ch cannot provide any appropriate hits for your search, local.ch includes the 1811 number for you. You can then simply tap on it and answer the question as to whether a connection should be made to 1811 with "yes" or "no". Please note the information displayed about the charges for this.

Questions about the map

How can I have an entry displayed on the map?

Tap on the entry in the Result List. You will then see the complete, detailed entry. Now tap on the address. The "Map" program will now be opened and the entry will be shown on the map.

The entry is not displayed on the map, or is displayed incorrectly.

Unfortunately, local.ch is not able to position all entries precisely on the map. You can help us here, however: Please send us an Email to info@local.ch with the following information:

  • Exact address with Street, House Number, Post Code and Town.
  • Information as to where the entry belongs on the map. You can provide us with this information with a) www.mapper.ch or b) with a picture of the map with the correct location drawn in or c) stating the precise coordinates.

How do I return from the Map/Route Planner back to the local.ch iPhone program?

local.ch uses the Map and Route Planner program that is already integrated into the iPhone. The Map and the Route Planner are displayed in different "Map" programs. Proceed as follows to return to the local.ch iPhone program:

  1. Close the "Maps" application by tapping on the "Home" button on your iPhone.
  2. On the Home Screen, open the local.ch iPhone application again.
  3. The local.ch iPhone program shows you the last displayed entry once again (no new search necessary).

General questions

How can I add a contact to the iPhone Address Book?

  • Select an entry from the Result List.
  • You can select the desired storage variant at the very bottom of the entry.

How much does it cost me to use the local.ch iPhone program?

The use of the local.ch iPhone program costs you nothing at all. Only the Internet connection fee has to be paid. The costs for this depend on your subscription and your provider. Please contact your provider if you have further questions regarding costs.

What do I need in order to be able to be able to use the local.ch iPhone program?

  • An iPhone or an iPod Touch.
  • An Internet connection.
  • An account with the iTunes Store.
  • The Installation of the local.ch iPhone program.
  • Ready!

How do I position the local.ch iPhone program on the first page of my Home Screen?

How can I install or de-install the local.ch iPhone program onto/from my iPhone?

For the installation, go directly to the iTunes Store. For de-installation, please read the instructions in your iPhone User Guide (PDF) (Chapter 9 - App Store).
