It is important to note that a watch mechanism generally runs 24 hours a day. Many gears are constantly turning, and oils and greases tend to dry out over time.
Wear and tear can occur on the pivots of the gears and on the pivots of the balance wheel. It is normally recommended that watches be serviced every five years to prevent wear and tear due to lack of lubrication.
Most of the time, customers bring their watches in for servicing when the watch is running fast or slow, or has stopped.
