We implement federal and cantonal tax laws and thus provide services for the federal government, the canton of Bern, the Bernese municipalities, and taxpayers. Our employees (around 750 full-time positions) work at locations in Bern, Biel, Burgdorf, Moutier, and Thun.
We are responsible for ensuring that the annual tax returns submitted by 670,000 private individuals and self-employed persons, as well as 50,000 legal entities such as corporations, cooperatives, associations, foundations, and other legal entities based in the canton of Bern, are assessed correctly. Our area of responsibility also includes special taxes such as real estate gains tax, inheritance and gift tax, and withholding tax. And we ensure that taxes are paid.
We issue general orders that fall within our jurisdiction and prepare draft legislation and implementing regulations for cantonal and municipal taxes.
