Political structure of the municipality

This is the executive body of the municipality and, within the municipality of Ticino, it is the oldest authority, composed of citizens who exercise civil rights. It is a collegial body called upon by law to administer the municipality, authorized to take care of public affairs, taking all measures within its competence to protect the interests of the local community. The Municipality of Chiasso is composed of five municipal councilors and is chaired by the mayor, a figure who not only holds the role of primus inter pares with mere prerogatives of honor, but also a position distinguished by specific and innumerable powers. Once the Mayor has been elected by popular vote at the beginning of each four-year administrative term, the Town Council, meeting in a constituent session, appoints the Deputy Mayor from among its members and establishes the departments, assigning them to individual Councilors, in order to divide up the administrative apparatus with the main aim of facilitating the examination of matters within their competence.
