Cantonal agricultural enterprise
Work hard on the land to reap rewards
The MezzanaCantonal Agricultural Company manages the farm owned by the Canton of Ticino and is responsible for the agricultural estate in Gudo.
In Mezzana, various agricultural production sectors coexist on a total area of approximately 60 hectares. The new barn has space for around fifty head of cattle, which move to the company's mountain pastures in the Morobbia Valley during the summer, where excellent Ticino PDO alpine cheese is produced.
A considerable part of the agricultural area is used for the production of fodder for livestock and cereal crops. Thanks to 0.75 hectares of covered areas, the horticultural sector is active throughout the year. However, the sector that plays a priority role is wine production, which allows for the production of around 60,000 bottles of fine wines, particularly reds.
The cantonal agricultural estate is located on the Magadino plain. In 2008, the farm was converted to organic farming. In Gudo, the main activity is field cultivation, with crops of corn (grain and polenta), soybeans, and wheat, all of which are highly prized by the organic market. One hectare is devoted to fruit growing, with the production of organic persimmons and apples.
The cultivation of aromatic herbs used for the production of herbal teas has also begun.
The farm plays an important role for the cantonal agricultural school, which is an essential training ground for those who want to enter the world of agriculture: the Centro Professionale del Verde(Professional Green Center), as it has recently been renamed, undoubtedly has a bright future, with all the right credentials to become a real driving force for farms in Ticino.
