Fondation Martin Bodmer – Contacts & Location
Description
Description
Created in 1971, the Martin Bodmer Foundation houses both an exceptional heritage library and an innovative museum dedicated to the greatest universal texts.
.This unique venue thus presents major testimonies to human thought from the origins of writing to the present day: this priceless collection is considered one of the finest private collections in the world.
The Foundation houses some 150,000 documents in nearly 80 languages. Among them are hundreds of papyri, Western and Eastern medieval manuscripts, thousands of autograph pages and rare prints (including 270 15th-century incunabula, among them one of the 48 surviving copies of the " Gutenberg Bible ").
The Foundation's collection is one of the world's finest private collections.
Since 2003, the Foundation has also welcomed all visitors curious to discover this heritage within its walls, thanks to the opening of an underground museum designed by the great Swiss architect Mario Botta.
