Description
From hobby to professional
Brewing beer was Roger Frei's hobby, but it has now become his profession. He is now opening a new business premises for his brew and smoke store in Densbüren.
He doesn't drink that much beer, he eats a lot more chocolate, says Roger Frei, who answers the phone with "Schoggi" as a matter of course. "Schoggi" is his name, and he must have noticed his fondness for chocolate at an early age, ever since he was a child. And yet, Roger "Schoggi" Frei is not a chocolatier, but a brewer. He officially registered his brewery five years ago. His enterprising wife, Silvia Herzog, had decided that all the beer he brewed as a hobby had to be sold to consumers. Since then, Schoggi beer has been tapped at village and club festivals in the Upper Fricktal and in the "Löwen" in Herznach, where Roger Frei lives, now 6,000 to 8,000 liters per year.Jumping in at the deep endHow did the trained bricklayer get into it? The story is easy to tell. A colleague wanted to sell his brewing system, which only managed 70 liters, so he took it over without further ado, explains Schoggi. The first attempts turned into a passion. The brewing system was expanded. The Rauch- und Braushop in Bünzen, where Schoggi soon gave brewing courses himself, was the supplier of the system components and brewing equipment.
And so one thing led to another. When Dani Schwizer offered to buy this very brewing and smoking store in 2012, Schoggi jumped at the chance. He took over the business, which, in addition to brewing and sausage-making courses, primarily offers a full range of brewing accessories online, as well as everything that barbecue kings need to produce and smoke their own sausages.
It was a leap in the dark. "I had mastered the art of brewing beer, but I had no idea about selling it," says Schoggi. Well, the journey to Bünzen was too far, the premises too small. New business premises were found in Densbüren, where the property of the Häseli carpentry business had become vacant following its move to Zeihen.
By now, Schoggi and his wife employ around ten people, both permanent staff and those who are on call and paid by the hour when they are needed. For example, in the course restaurant, where around 1000 people, not just men, are introduced to beer brewing and sausage making every year.Lucrative online tradeHe makes 85 to 90 percent of his seven-figure turnover, as Schoggi bluntly reveals on his website, from online trading, two thirds of which is from brewery accessories. The market for this exists; there are around 800 breweries in Switzerland, the vast majority of which are small to very small. However, Roger Frei also supplies larger breweries that develop new varieties in their laboratories and are dependent on a supplier that can also deliver hops and yeast in smaller quantities.
By the way, the salsicce and luganighe, the result of the first sausage course in the new business premises opened a month ago in Densbüren, taste delicious.
