The ESTI is the supervisory and control authority for electrical installations that are not subject to the Federal Office of Transport FOT. It ensures that these installations are planned, constructed and maintained in a safe and environmentally friendly manner. This includes high-voltage installations, low-voltage installations and low-current installations.

The activities of the ESTI are aimed at ensuring electrical safety for people, animals and property. The ESTI is also committed to the safe use of electricity by maintaining the safety of electrical installations and products in Switzerland at a high technical level. Finally, the ESTI acts as a supervisory or technical authority to ensure that electrical installations are planned, constructed, operated and dismantled taking into account the interests of spatial and environmental planning and third parties. The ESTI's supervisory and control activities include low-voltage installations, high- and low-voltage installations and market surveillance of electrical products. The ESTI keeps its own accounts and is subject to the supervision of the Department of DETEC.
