RG - Les Cadres Gault – Contacts & Location
Description
Custom frame fabrication and restoration. For artwork, mirrors, photos
It all began at the end of the 19th century in Paris near the Canal Saint Martin.
The Maison founded by Emile GAULT, specialized in framing and the manufacture of carved wooden frames, opened a store on rue Bonaparte in 1936 in the heart of Saint Germain des prés.
This address became unmissable, as Picasso, Chagall and Dali came to frame their works.
Today, the store has established itself on rue du Faubourg Saint Honoré, and to stay as close as possible and always provide the best service to its customers, museums, historical monuments, galleries, decorators, private individuals, another has opened in Geneva and then one in Moscow.
From generation to generation, staff are trained by apprenticing with their elders. Precise gestures, love of a job well done, experience, creativity, this subtle alchemy is the foundation of RG Les Cadres GAULT.
For over a century, we've been making and restoring frames and mirrors, perpetuating the tradition of our craft in both the gestures and materials used.
So in our workshops, carpenters, woodcarvers, finishers and gilders combine their skills to strive for excellence. All our frames are made entirely by hand.
We're delighted to be able to offer you a wide range of frames.
We're delighted to welcome you to our stores, where you'll find our frames on display for sale our artisan framers are on hand to listen to your needs. Making a frame
In our workshops, everything is made the traditional way. Here we present the various stages in the manufacture of a frame.
First step: carving
In our workshops, everything is made in the traditional way. Here we take you through the various stages involved in making a frame.
FIRST STEP: THE SCULPTURE
The frame or motif to be carved arrives rough in sculpture. The sculptor draws the motif to be made and strikes the contours with gouges of pitch corresponding to the drawing.
The second stage involves removing the wood to clear the patterns and set the volumes in place. The final step, the hooping, refines the details.
With all 4 sides completed, the frame is assembled and connected for a perfect finish.
With the frame or glass finished, the primers' work can begin.
SECOND STEP: THE PRIMING
The object arrives rough, it is glued (rabbit skin glue and blanc de meudon) and bleached (same mixture but thicker) with a brush.
Priming: when dry, the whites are softened with canvas and water. Then begins the reparure work where all ornaments will be cleared and chiseled with a reparer iron.
THIRD STEP: GILDING
With the work completed, the frame arrives at gilding where it is glued (june ochre and rabbit skin glue) and covered with plate (a mixture of clay and rabbit skin glue) traditionally in red.
When the plate is dry, the work of laying the gold leaf can begin. The gold leaves are laid down using a sable-hair gilding palette.
When the gold is dry, it is burnished with Agathe stone to obtain shiny parts.
The final stage is patina. It allows us to obtain all the nuances of very new to very old gold according to our customers' desires.
We make and restore frames and mirrors for lovers of fine craftsmanship. Below is a non-exhaustive list of paintings by artists we have framed.
