Geological
The municipality of Gurzelen is largely shaped by the glacial masses of the ice ages, which were once up to 800 meters thick. They pressed the subsoil into hard layers of sandstone and Nagelfluh, carved out hill shapes and excavated depressions that were later filled in to form moors.
When the glaciers retreated, the stones that were carried over long distances on their backs were left behind, such as the "Fuchsenstein" in Steinhölzli, which originates from the Grimsel region, and the erratic boulder in the forest near Kühweid from the Kleine Scheidegg region.
