Fat stains on the wall
Sprinkle talcum powder on a used clean powder puff and rub over the stains. Repeat immediately until the stain is removed
Or mix a paste of cornstarch with water. Apply, leave on for a few hours, then brush off. Repeat if it didn't work the first time.

Whitening carpets
Spread salt generously over the carpet. Leave to work for about an hour, then vacuum.
Apply lukewarm vinegar water to the carpet with a sponge and rub in well. Leave to dry. The colors will shine again. (Mix water and vinegar in a ratio of 10:1.)

Remove stuck-on paper from wood
Do not scrape with a knife! Apply cooking oil drop by drop to the paper. Leave to work and rub with a soft cloth. Repeat the process until the paper is completely gone.

Remove blood stains from upholstery
Immediately cover the blood stain with a paste made from cornstarch and cold water. Rub in lightly and then leave to dry in the sun. Brush off after drying. Repeat the procedure if necessary.

Removing candle wax from wooden surfaces
Soften the wax with a hair dryer. Remove the wax with paper towels and wash off with vinegar water.

Grease and oil stains
Sprinkle salt on grease splashes immediately. The salt will absorb the grease and prevent the stain from forming.
Or sprinkle talcum powder or cornstarch on the fresh stain. Rub in well and leave to work until the stain is absorbed. Brush off and rub with a damp cloth.

Synthetic table tops
Rub in a little lemon juice. Dry with paper kitchen towels and rub to a shine with newspaper.

Oak furniture
If your oak furniture needs freshening up, heat some beer in a wide basin and wash the furniture with an ordinary cloth. Dry immediately with a clean cloth. The furniture will look like new again.

Washing glassware
Never put your fine glasses in the dishwasher - especially those with gold rims.
Always slide glasses with a thick base sideways into the warm water - not bottom first, otherwise they could easily break due to the sudden heating.
Crystal glasses will shine beautifully if they are rinsed in warm water with a little vinegar added.
Jars should only be dried with dry, lint-free cloths (preferably linen).

Glass problems
Vases with very narrow necks can be cleaned by filling them with hot water, adding two teaspoons of vinegar and a little rice and shaking vigorously.
Glass carafes can be filled with a finely chopped, large potato and warm water and cleaned by shaking vigorously.

Chemineé
Vinegar cleans the brick surround of the fireplace. Dip a hand brush in vinegar and scrub quickly. Immediately afterwards, absorb the moisture with a sponge.
Rub off any soiled areas with a plastic eraser. This works particularly well on fireplaces made of porous natural stone.

Cigarette smoke
Use a damp towel as a fan and swirl it around the room. The smoke will disappear quickly.
Place four bowls of vinegar in the corners of the room where smokers congregate.
Or spread small plates of activated charcoal around the room to improve stale party air.

Remove chewing gum
Press ice cubes onto the gum until it becomes brittle and can be broken away. Then remove any remaining traces with stain remover water.

Repairing a burn mark
Pull a few fibers from the carpet with a razor blade or tweezers. Place the fibers over the burn. Apply all-purpose glue over the spot and press the fibers into it. Place a paper kitchen towel and a heavy book on top. This will allow the glue to dry slowly and the burn hole will disappear.
