Description
Keeping koi is a wonderful hobby that will give you many a must-have hour, away from the stress and hustle and bustle, or at least it should be!
My enthusiasm for fish started at school when I was given a goldfish, still in a very large preserving jar, by my grandmother.
I later got my first aquarium. I was hooked on aquariums and bought another one with my first apprentice's wages. Another 79 were to follow. At that time, I bred around 30 varieties of aquarium fish, various plants and was a regular guest at fish and plant fairs in Switzerland. In 1989, I sold the whole system as I was devoting myself to my studies. At the end of my studies I suddenly had endless time and the search for more koi abroad led me to Japan. I was able to make contact with my agent at the time at a large international trade fair. I recorded my knowledge at the time in a book entitled "Ihr Hobby Japanische Farbkarpfen" (Your hobby: Japanese color carp), published by Dähne Verlag.
Together with my father, we built a pond so that the fish could live outdoors - with lots of mistakes, of course. I then bought my first koi in a pet store. My interest in this species deepened through specialist literature. I combed through all the pet shops in search of the most beautiful specimens from Japan for our pond.
I finally found them - Japanese koi in beautiful colors - and that was over 43 years ago.
I have been flying to Japan for more than 27 years now and I am still koi kichi (crazy)!
