Safety standards to be met
There is a European standard EN 13241-1 that regulates the installation of a gate or garage door with an automatic opening system in a private enclosure. This standard, which is more demanding than the previous French standard NF 25-362, requires gate builders not only to deliver results, but also to provide regular maintenance for private customers.

According to this European standard, all materials used to install an automatic gate system must bear the CE mark. Only this mark can guarantee that these materials comply with the European standard. When the system is installed, professionals must also carry out tests to ensure that there is no risk of shearing, crushing, jamming or pinching. The professional in this case will conduct the tests using specialized, certified tooling.
The results of these tests may subsequently compel gate owners to install gate-integrated photocells. This has the effect of signalling any object or individual that may impede the movement of the gate as it opens or closes. A warning light may then be required to signal gate movements to the public, particularly for automatic gates giving access to a crowded street.
.The owner of a house with an automatic gate must have in his possession documents attesting to the proper operation of his gate and initialed by an official recognized by the authorities. This document should contain, among other things: a CE certificate, a test certificate and a maintenance log.
The various safety accessories that a gate must have
If they are not purchased with the gate, you can obtain these accessories from suppliers who will then be able to guarantee you optimum safety in the daily use of your gate with automatic opening system.
These accessories are:
- a mirror to facilitate maneuvering, especially at night.
- photoelectric cells that are installed face to face to ensure that no object or individual impedes the opening or closing of the gate.
- a lighting system all around the gate when it opens or closes.
- a flashing light to warn the public that the gate is opening or closing.
- a battery backup to ensure gate operation in the event of a power failure.
- an external unlocking system if manual opening doesn't work as it should.
