When Fyodor Dostoevsky was a prisoner in Siberia, isolated from the world, locked up between four walls and surrounded by desolate plains covered with endless snow, he wrote heartfelt letters to his distant family, saying:

"Send me books, lots of books, so that my soul does not die!"

He was cold and did not ask for fire; he was terribly thirsty and did not ask for water; he asked for books.
