We implement federal and cantonal tax legislation and thus provide services for the Confederation, the Canton of Bern, the Bernese municipalities and taxpayers. Our employees (around 750 full-time positions) work at locations in Bern, Biel/Bienne, Burgdorf, Moutier and Thun.

We are responsible for ensuring that the tax returns submitted annually for 670,000 taxable private individuals and self-employed persons as well as 50,000 legal entities such as corporations, cooperatives, associations, foundations and other legal entities based in the Canton of Bern are assessed correctly. Our work also includes special taxes such as property gains tax, inheritance and gift tax and withholding tax. And we make sure that the taxes are paid.

We issue general decrees that fall within our remit and prepare draft legislation and implementing regulations for cantonal and communal taxes.
