First precautions in the event of death:

At the time of death in hospital / retirement or nursing home, the doctor on duty determines the death and signs the medical death certificate. The family is free to choose their own funeral director, who will be informed by the next of kin about the death and how it is to be carried out.

In the event of a death at home, a doctor must first determine the death and certify it with his signature before the mortician of choice can transfer the deceased.

In the event of an unclear death (suicide, accident or if the cause of death is in doubt), the police must always be called first, who will then take further steps.

Registration at the civil registry office should be completed within 48 hours of the death with the medical death certificates provided for this purpose. The relatives can do this themselves or hand everything over to the funeral home.
