Fondation Paternus – Contacts & Location
Description
The foundation Fondation Paternus may in particular grant financial assistance to Italians or people of Italian origin, for the financial support of cultural events organized by communities in Switzerland pursuing activities for the development of Italian culture, throughout Switzerland and Europe.
The main aim is to work for a pleasant coexistence in housing, leisure, development for all and at all ages.
A little history of Payerne :
A Vaud town, commune and district in the Broye valley, it was called Paterniacum in 961, Paierno in 1238,
Paerno in 1242, then Payerne. The name Payerne derives directly from the cognomen Paternus, "paternal", or from the gentilic Paternius. The learned form Paterniacum in 961 being an invention of the clerics.
It was in the third century that the Roman Publius Gracius Paternus built a villa "Paternia", around which a village quickly formed, the first embryo of the present-day city.
Payerne also bears the present-day German name Peterlingen, derived from the Germanization into Paterningum of the Roman name.
On our banner, far right, is the image of the bust of Marcus Aurelius, Roman emperor. The reason is that there is no representation of Publius Gracius Paterneus. Marcus Aurelius was a natural choice, since he lived at the same time, but also because a gilded bust was found in Avenches in 1939.
.On the far left, the foundation's emblem features: the Payerne abatial, the stars of Europe, the Swiss and Italian flags and the two tunnels of the Simplon and Gotthard ( original work by J.-C. Juriens ).
