What is CBD
CBD and THC have practically the same chemical composition Image: Wikipedia
Students in baggy pants, businessmen in suits and 70-year-old grannies - everyone wants to try the "legal weed". The specialist trade is posting record figures, consumers are happy, the authorities are overwhelmed. What exactly is CBD?
CBD is the abbreviation for cannabidiol, a chemical substance from the class of cannabinoids. CBD and THC are very similar in structure and have the same chemical formula. There is also hardly any difference in appearance and smell.

CBD, however, has slight variations in its molecular structure and is therefore not psychotropic and does not affect the central nervous system.
Commercially available legal cannabis usually has a CBD content of ten to 20 percent and a residual THC content of 0.3 to 0.7 percent.

Does CBD get you high?

CBD does not get you high - at least not in the popular sense. CBD is considered a non-psychoactive cannabinoid. This means that it has no effect on the central nervous system and does not affect cognition or perception - in other words, it does not cause intoxication.
The consumption of CBD has a calming effect and helps against cramps, inflammation, anxiety and nausea. The residual THC content in legal cannabis is not sufficient to induce a high.
If CBD doesn't get you high, why smoke it?

The medical effect of CBD is currently unclear. Nevertheless, scientists and doctors suspect that the legal weed could be used as a medicine for many illnesses.
Possible therapeutic effects against epilepsy, anxiety disorders, sleep disorders, nausea, psychosis, depression and even cancer
are being discussed. In Switzerland, however, for legal reasons it is not permitted to make any specific healing promises - CBD is only sold as a tobacco substitute or raw material. Sellers and producers therefore distance themselves from the medicinal effects and ask consumers to make their own experiences.
According to the Association of Swiss Physicians, however, CBD can be prescribed by doctors for moderate to severe spasticity in multiple sclerosis (MS). To do so, doctors must demonstrate that the disease severely impairs quality of life and that other therapies have not been successful.10 celebrities you would never have thought smoked pot#MeToo: These women incriminate Harvey Weinstein

Is CBD dangerous?
To date, there is no evidence that CBD can be dangerous. Nevertheless, a warning label is attached to the tobacco substitute. Picture: KEYSTONE
There is still too little information about potential dangers, says Markus Meury from Addiction Switzerland. "We are seeing a boom in CBD weed, but we can still say very little about the dangers. Basically, however, you can say that smoking is always unhealthy due to the carcinogenic combustion particles."
Who consumes CBD - the experienced pot smoker or the inexperienced drug novice? "Even if CBD doesn't induce a high, it could be an exit aid for cannabis addicts. However, it could just as easily be a gateway to marijuana," says Meury.

Is CBD really legal?
CBD is legal. But what CBD is sold as is another question. Image: STRINGER/REUTERS
Since CBD is a non-intoxicating substance, it is not subject to the Narcotics Act and is legally available. Since 2011, there has also been a provision stating that cannabis with a THC content of less than one percent is not subject to the Narcotics Act and is therefore also legal.
In Switzerland, there are only four legal CBD tobacco kits. The rest of the CBD products are sold as raw materials and are actually in a legal gray area. CBD raw materials are theoretically not suitable for consumption, but many people smoke them anyway. Unlike tobacco substitutes, however, CBD raw materials are exempt from tobacco tax.
This is what Swissmedic, the Swiss Agency for Therapeutic Products says:"Raw materials containing CBD are often found on the market without a specific purpose. They cannot be clearly qualified, as they can be used to manufacture different products with different intended uses, which in turn are subject to different legislation." - As of February 27, 2017
