Mould

What is mold?

Mould is the colloquial term for mildew. These are a natural part of our living environment and are normally harmless. However, if the concentration of mold exceeds a certain level, it can cause serious health problems for humans. The effects of indoor mold on human health are a much-discussed but completely underestimated topic among the general public. Clear links between mold contamination and respiratory diseases or allergies have been confirmed in a large number of studies.

How do molds develop?

Every day, several liters of water are converted to steam in living spaces through washing, bathing, cooking, etc. In old, poorly insulated buildings, the water vapor can escape through cracks. With more insulation - thanks to new thermal insulation windows for example - the exchange with the outside air is reduced. Vapor often condenses on the wall when it is at a lower temperature than the air in the room. This happens primarily at night, when the temperature in the room and on the outside walls drops: The colder room air can thus absorb less moisture. The water vapor condenses on the walls. These are ideal conditions for mold. In the age of energy saving with tightly closing windows and higher thermal insulation, there is an increasing number of health-threatening problems indoors.  In addition to structural defects, the causes often include incorrect usage behavior. Signs of moisture problems include constantly tarnished window panes, damp patches, peeling wallpaper and a musty smell. Mold thrives best at a relative humidity of approx. 70 % or more and a temperature of over 20 °C. However, the development conditions and damaging potential of mold species vary greatly. Molds can grow on a variety of materials and in a wide range of temperatures. In principle, however, the following applies: windows and walls can quickly become damp in the event of high relative humidity, low outside temperatures and poor thermal insulation.

Consequences of mold:
