The Zihlmann bakery was founded in 1990. Viktor and Marlène Zihlmann-Wicki took over the Studer bakery in Lehn, Escholzmatt, and its branch in the village. They wanted to start their own business. They wanted to make their own decisions, create new things, and be independent. They were also looking forward to running their own business and managing employees. What began with six employees has now grown into a thriving bakery with 50 employees.
BAKERY/PASTRY SHOP – FROM PRODUCTION TO PRODUCT RANGE
Our production facilities produce much more than just bread. Our employees bake and produce with passion. Much of the work is done by hand, and the quality is testament to traditional craftsmanship. The selection of baked goods, bread, snacks, and pastries in all our stores is huge and very varied. In addition to our house specialties "St. Galler-Brot," "Birräweggä," and "Öpfubirräweggä," our meter-long sandwiches are particularly popular.
The bakery is run with a great love of the craft. Tradition and innovation have always been the focus. The well-coordinated team, many of whom have been with the company for many years, is able to produce high-quality products on time, every time. Thirty apprentices have already completed their training at the Zihlmann bakery.
Fresh bread is baked daily for our stores in the production facilities, which were renovated in 2016, and three Volg branches in Trubschachen, Marbach, and Schangnau are also supplied. In addition, deliveries are made to restaurants, retirement homes, schools, clubs, and companies.
Varied, surprising, and unusual
In addition to traditional baked goods such as bread and pastries, the Zihlmann bakery also offers delicious seasonal products. At Christmas, the homemade Gritibänze or Christmas cookies are particularly popular. Before Easter, on the other hand, Easter bunnies are traditionally molded with great attention to detail. Last but not least, the patisserie, cakes, and the widely known "Öpfubirrewegge" are also very popular.
When the Zihlmann bakery was founded, the popular sandwiches, which were completely unknown at the time, were also created. Today, the Zihlmann bakery produces a huge selection of sandwiches, with the meter-long sandwich being particularly popular as a snack or for birthday parties.
We strive to constantly surprise our customers with new products and to expand our range with unusual delicacies. Come and see our endless selection for yourself!
THE CAFÉ – A POPULAR MEETING PLACE
With the construction of the new café in 2016, the Zihlmann bakery has created a great meeting place for the local population and tourists. When asked what motivated Viktor Zihlmann to build a café of this size, he said at the time: "When the 2014 delegates' meeting of the Central Swiss Yodeling Association in Schüpfheim decided that the 2016 Central Swiss Yodeling Festival would be held here in Schüpfheim, I thought to myself, 'By then, I'll have opened a beautiful café.'" No sooner said than done.
The shop on one side is very inviting with its huge display window. Many types of bread, pastries, and other delicacies are attractively presented. A visit to the café next door is a must. The café is bright, cozy, and lovingly furnished. It seats 65 people. In the small but exquisite garden restaurant, a short stay and culinary delights are guaranteed.
"We want to appeal to as large and diverse a clientele as possible; young and old alike should feel at home in the café," says Julia Schwab, Viktor Zihlmann's partner and head of sales and purchasing. Visitors can choose from one of the delicious lunch menus every day, which are prepared according to the motto "Cooking is love." Our takeaway service is also very popular, and the entire range can be enjoyed at home or in the office.
"Our establishment is not a restaurant; it should have the distinct character of a café," says Viktor Zihlmann. The combination of upholstered benches and wooden furniture creates a cozy atmosphere. The many cushions and wool blankets for the chairs in the outdoor area make it feel cozy – almost like an oasis of well-being.
