Interview from MARCH-BLÄTTLI 2015
What exactly do you do, Ms. Dettling?
I work with antique objects. Preferably very old ones, over 100 years old or even more. You can bring me any type of wood, because I know my way around woods like walnut, cherry, oak or fir. First, the piece of furniture is leached and washed. After it has dried, I mend or replace the relevant parts. Of course, I also offer surface treatments as required.
<How did you get into this line of work?
When I was young, I worked for Franz Deuber in Galgenen, who made various wooden objects himself. Later, he started restoring antique furniture and so on. Unfortunately, "old junk" was not as popular as it is today. Now in the 21st century, it's chic again to mix homes with old and modern furniture or accessories. The way I made my first wardrobe myself 40 years ago, I was completely gripped by the work.
How do I proceed when I have an old piece of furniture at home?
First of all, customers call me or come directly to my store and tell me what they have in their cellar or attic. Depending on the condition of the antique utensil, a telephone consultation is sometimes enough or I have to inspect the good piece. I am also happy to come to the customer's home and advise them on site.
What kind of furniture do you restore and where does it come from?
It's mainly cupboards, chests, chairs, tables etc. from all over Switzerland. Unfortunately, many people don't know whether their old furniture is still worth anything or shy away from the cost of restoring it and then throw it away. I think that's a great pity. With a quick inquiry, many an antique item could be restored to its former glory. It's not always just about the material value. The personal memories associated with the antique object are often not insignificant.
Do you only restore or can people also buy fully restored furniture from you?
Of course I have a large exhibition with beautiful items of all kinds. Just drop by and let yourself be inspired. There is sure to be something for you.
What is the best part of the job for you?
Delivering the finished restored piece of furniture to a beautiful home.
