What exactly do you do, Ms. Dettling?

I work on antique objects. Preferably very old ones, over 100 years old or even older. You can bring me any type of wood, because I am very familiar with woods such as walnut, cherry, oak, and fir. First, the piece of furniture is leached and washed. After it has dried, I repair or replace the relevant parts. Of course, I also offer surface treatments as desired.

 

How did you get into this line of work?

When I was younger, I worked in Galgenen for Franz Deuber, who made various wooden objects himself. Later, he started restoring antique furniture and other items. Unfortunately, "old junk" wasn't as popular back then as it is today. Now, in the 21st century, it is chic again to mix old and modern furniture or accessories in homes. When I made my first cabinet myself 40 years ago, I was completely absorbed by the work.

 

How do I proceed when I have an old piece of furniture at home?

First, customers call me or come directly to my shop and tell me what they have in their basement or attic. Depending on the condition of the antique item, a telephone consultation is sometimes sufficient, or I may need to examine the piece in person. I am also happy to visit customers at home and advise them on site.

 

What kind of furniture do you restore and where does it come from?

They are mainly cabinets, chests, chairs, tables, etc. from all over Switzerland. Unfortunately, many people don't know whether their old furniture is still worth anything or are put off by the cost of restoration and end up throwing it away. I think that's a real shame. With a quick inquiry, many antique items could be restored to their former glory. It's not always just about the material value. The personal memories associated with the antique item are often significant.

 

Do you only restore furniture, or can people also buy fully restored furniture from you?

Of course, I have a large showroom with all kinds of beautiful items. Just come by and be inspired. I'm sure you'll find something you like.
