How does mold develop?
Mold spores are completely natural and are transported through the air in our environment. Three things are needed for mold to develop and for the spores to multiply:
- Moisture
- Warmth
- A breeding ground
If all these conditions are met, this represents an "optimal" habitat for mold spores, which then spread very quickly. In living spaces such as bathrooms or kitchens, moisture is generated through use, which can lead to the formation of mold.
This usually happens through indirect humidification by condensation that collects on cold wall surfaces. This is why basements are often affected by mold, as they usually have no windows and are colder.
Increased humidity in living spaces can have various causes:
- Leaky walls
- Damaged roofs, rain gutters, and the like
- Burst pipes
- Inadequate or incorrect ventilation
- Insulation that is too dense
- Condensation in cold areas of the room
- Uneven heat distribution due to thermal bridges
Is mold dangerous?
Mold produces toxins that can easily spread through the air. Inhaling these toxins can cause symptoms of poisoning in humans, such as headaches and concentration problems. However, not everyone reacts in the same way; some people have no symptoms at all, while others experience severe perception disorders and suffer from extreme fatigue.
In principle, mold is not toxic to humans per se, but prolonged exposure to large amounts of mold can certainly cause physical reactions. However, the potential danger should be determined by a professional, as it is very difficult for a layperson to assess. A professional analysis by an expert is certainly recommended.
Types of mold in houses and apartments
Green mold
Occurrence: frequently on damp walls and ceilings, often in damp rooms such as bathrooms and kitchens, joints, and poorly ventilated areas such as under floor coverings or behind wall paneling
Health: not very harmful to animals or humans, but weakens the immune system, can trigger allergies, asthma, and headaches, spores can attack lung tissue and cause lasting damage
Black mold
Occurrence: can form from numerous types of mold, occurs particularly in cases of moisture problems in or on walls, wallpaper, plastered walls and ceilings, and tile joints
Health: extremely toxic to humans, causes various illnesses ranging from allergies to severe kidney disease and stachybotryosis (comparable to Alzheimer's disease)
White mold
Occurrence: rather inconspicuous and particularly difficult to detect on light-colored walls and plaster, therefore often remains undetected for a long time. Often occurs in ceiling or floor corners, niches, behind furniture on exterior walls, in basements, and generally in cold, unheated, and damp rooms.
Health: irritates mucous membranes, can lead to sinusitis, frequent colds, skin diseases, coughing, chronic bronchitis, or joint pain
Red mold
Occurrence: on paper wallpaper, in bathrooms, toilets, and kitchens
Health: Can lead to lung diseases such as asthma.
Yellow mold
Occurrence: Can occur anywhere in the home or house, but prefers damp corners, cotton fabrics, and upholstered furniture.
Health: Very hazardous to health; the toxin aflatoxin can cause liver cancer and heart failure in humans, among other things.

Mold infestations – before/after
Mold infestation levels
Level
1. Mold is usually first noticed on joints in the bathroom or on windows. On walls, it is usually no larger than a hand. The best way to remove mold here is with water and detergent or mold remover.
Level
2. The mold has spread over a larger area of the wall or ceiling. Usually, only one area of the room is affected. The area is less than half a square meter.
Tip: The cause of the mold infestation should be determined by a specialist so that the fungus can be removed properly.
Stage
3. The fungus is visible over a large area (more than half a square meter) or even in several places in the room. There is a persistent smell of mold.
Recommendation: Contact a mold expert immediately to prevent the mold infestation from spreading further.
How can I get rid of the mold?
Mold analysis
When mold infestation occurs, it is essential to first find the cause of the mold growth. Only after a comprehensive analysis of the walls, where moisture and heat are measured, can it be determined how and why the fungus developed. Permanent removal of the mold can only be guaranteed if the exact cause is clarified.
After evaluating the results, you will receive a detailed report on the mold findings. We will also suggest further measures to repair the damage and provide you with a list of the expected costs.
Professional & ecological mold removal
Not only the mold itself, but also the methods used to combat it can pose a health risk. This is because many conventional mold removal products are often toxic or too aggressive. Not only does this pollute the indoor air, but it can also cause health problems during use or lead to recurring fungal infestation.
Professional removal using ecological methods is recommended for a satisfactory, safe, and mold-free result.

Remediation after mold infestation
Before remediation can be carried out, the causes must be identified and eliminated by analyzing the fungal infestation. This is the only way to achieve a long-term and sustainable result. However, mold remediation does not only mean killing the mold, but also removing it.
The necessary measures are taken depending on the case and the severity of the fungal infestation. These include ecological measures such as preventing spore formation, visual measures such as bleaching the infested area, removing the mold from the infested substance, and preventing new mold infestation.
How much does mold remediation cost?
Costs for mold infestation analysis
(with/without expert opinion)
After an on-site consultation, a mold report will be prepared at your request. This costs between $280 and $360.
An analysis with an expert opinion, which we prepare over six to seven hours, including five pages of documentation, costs between CHF 900 and CHF 1,000.
Costs for mold removal
The larger the mold infestation, the more expensive the removal. The size of a mold infestation includes the entire area over which the mold spores have spread. This can also include furniture and curtains.
The larger the area affected, the more material is needed for removal. One of our experts will be happy to assess your mold infestation and provide you with a cost estimate.
You can expect to pay around CHF 800.
Costs for mold remediation
Mold removal usually involves not only removing the mold, but also repainting walls, relaying tiles, or replastering walls. This is done with the intention of preventing future mold infestations.
It is possible that we may discover further mold infestation during the remediation, but this only happens if no mold assessment has been carried out in advance. In this case, the actual costs may differ from the quote provided.
The cost of mold remediation depends on the severity and type of mold infestation, as well as the duration of the remediation. Costs are expected to start at $1,900 and up.
How can I prevent mold?
Tips for preventing mold
How do I ventilate properly?
Windows should be opened fully 3 to 5 times a day for 5 to 6 minutes, depending on the level of humidity (cross ventilation). This allows a lot of moisture to be removed in a short time without losing too much heating energy. Additional ventilation is recommended after cooking, showering, bathing, and using the laundry room. Ventilating for too long cools the walls unnecessarily and promotes the formation of mold. Humid indoor air should not be directed into other rooms, but directly outside. More information on ventilation and the different types of mold can be found here.
