Flaviano Salzani: From Verona to Venice
Salzani. It's a surname that evokes Italy, the Veneto region where his father came from, an immigrant who left his native Verona for the canton of Fribourg to repair Swiss shoes. And he married a woman from Gruyère, no less.
For more than 25 years, Flaviano Salzani has been filling his world with resolutely useless objects. Originally, it was a piercing and critical look at the society that surrounds and envelops us, the society in which we liquefy and consume ourselves. He has trawled through waste disposal sites and landfills. "It's my favorite store, my library," he often says. Amidst the accumulated abandonment, he finds symbols of a life that eludes him, traces of the human being he never tires of approaching before moving away. From four planks, he creates a tender and derisory image, a few graffiti later. A drum kit becomes a train, a cheese board, a star.
