Welcome to Zunzgen
Zunzkon was first mentioned in documents in 1323. It is an early medieval settlement name ending in -ing, which merged with the subsequent -hofen and was shortened to -kon and -gen. However, field names suggest that the area around Zunzgen was already settled before this. "Zunzger Büchel" or "Heidenbüchel": the spherical mound at the southern end of the village has a volume of approx. 6,000 m3. The village and castle belonged to the Homberg domain and were inherited by the Counts of Habsburg-Laufenburg in 1223. Their vassals were first the nobles of Frick, then the Eptingers from 1406 onwards. In the second half of the 15th century, Zunzgen became part of Basel and belonged to the Farnsburg district until it became part of the Sissach district in 1803. Until after the Reformation, the village had a St. John's Chapel, but was part of the parish of St. Jakob in Sissach. In 1830, Zunzgen and Tenniken were united to form a single parish. Sights: Heidenbüchel, a 30-meter-high debris cone that supported a wooden castle in the 10th or 11th century.
