Description
Welcome to Zunzgen
Zunzkon was first mentioned in a document in 1323. It is an early medieval settlement name on -ing, which merged with the following -hofen and was ground down to -kon and -gen. However, field names suggest that the Zunzgen area was already inhabited before this. "Zunzger Büchel" or "Heidenbüchel": The spherical mound at the southern end of the village has a volume of approx. 6,000m3. The village and castle probably belonged to the lordship of Homberg and were inherited by the Counts of Habsburg-Laufenburg in 1223. Their feudatories were first the nobles of Frick, and from 1406 the Eptingen family. In the second half of the 15th century, Zunzgen became part of Basel and belonged to the Farnsburger Amt until 1803, when it became part of the district of Sissach. The village had a St. Johannes chapel until after the Reformation, but was part of the parish of St. Jakob in Sissach. In 1830, Zunzgen and Tenniken were united into one parish. Places of interest: Heidenbüchel, a 30-metre-high cone of rubble that supported a wooden castle in the 10th or 11th century.
Zunzgen today
With around 2,600 inhabitants, Zunzgen is one of the larger municipalities in the Upper Basel region and is the third-largest municipality in the district of Sissach behind Sissach and Gelterkinden. In addition to a low municipal tax rate, Zunzgen also offers an exemplary infrastructure and several shopping facilities. We are also home to renowned industry. Our leisure activities leave little to be desired. Zunzgen is home to numerous clubs and associations, as well as a small but excellent swimming pool, the Vita-Parcours on the Hard, the sports facilities and the artificial ice rink next door in Sissach. Nature lovers get their money's worth. There is something for everyone. The village's own elementary school and the two kindergartens offer families nearby educational facilities for their little ones. Zunzgen is ideally located in terms of transport links, with freeway access in Sissach and Diegten and excellent public transport connections.
