The Hirslanden Heart Center Zurich is the largest private heart center in Switzerland. State-of-the-art medicine at university level and personal care provided by doctors working in partnership ensure optimal treatment.
Hypertension
Arterial hypertension is present when blood pressure readings at rest or during a 24-hour measurement average above 140/90 mmHg. If arterial hypertension is diagnosed, drug therapy, usually to be taken for life, should be initiated to prevent consequential damage.
Cardiology
The field of cardiology, as a subfield of internal medicine, deals with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the heart, the vessels near the heart, and the circulatory system.
Cardiac and vascular surgery
Cardiac surgery has been an independent medical specialty since 1993. It developed from general surgery with a specialization in thoracic and cardiovascular surgery and deals with the surgical treatment of congenital and acquired diseases and injuries of the heart and the vessels near the heart.
Echocardiography
Echocardiography (ultrasound examination of the heart) is one of the most important non-invasive imaging procedures in cardiology today. It provides comprehensive information about the structure and function of the heart. Diseases of the heart muscle, heart valves, congenital heart defects, statements about cardiac blood flow, and conclusions about diseases, e.g., of the lungs, can be made with certainty.
Pacemakers/ICDs
Pacemakers are electronic systems that prevent various cardiac arrhythmias that lead to a slow pulse. Advances in microelectronics have meant that today's modern systems can control up to three heart chambers, ensuring that the heart's electrical activity is as physiological as possible.
Life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias are eliminated by means of internal defibrillators (ICDs), which also function as pacemakers.
Rhythmology
Rhythmology is a specialty that deals with all forms and treatment options for cardiac arrhythmias.
The focus is on the invasive treatment of cardiac arrhythmias using catheter-based interventions. Arrhythmias can be treated at both the atrium and ventricle levels. The implantation of pacemakers or internal defibrillators to prevent sudden cardiac death is also important. Another area of application is stimulation in cases of heart muscle weakness through the implantation of biventricular systems.
