Franz Murer-Odermatt Inc.
In 1948, Franz Murer-Odermatt, known as "Steine-Franz" (Franz the Stone Man), founded his own business. As a trained bricklayer, he was able to build up a large customer base thanks to his excellent craftsmanship. His business premises, which included storage rooms, were located on Allmendstrasse in Beckenried. The company grew, and in 1957 the first fully hydraulic excavator was purchased to handle the civil engineering work. With the purchase of three dump trucks, the necessary transport for mountain road construction was accomplished.
At that time, ready-mixed concrete was unknown on construction sites, and there were no construction cranes. Concrete was produced directly on site and transported using wheelbarrows or conveyor belts. The fact that these materials were transported by sea using barges was one of the reasons why Franz Murer-Odermatt purchased the Hostettli property next to the car ferry owned by Marie Gander, popularly known as "S'Wolfelers-Marie." A large warehouse with a workshop was set up here.
No sooner had they left school than his sons joined the business and helped out energetically. In 1961, his son Walter began an apprenticeship as a bricklayer, Franz has been working as a construction machine operator since 1963, Josef completed his bricklaying apprenticeship from 1966 to 1969, and Ernst has been driving trucks as a chauffeur since 1975 (retired in 2014) and Kurt since 1977. Since completing her commercial apprenticeship in 1964, daughter Margrit has devoted herself to administrative work. The company has been continuously modernized with new equipment and machinery. Training young professionals is also a tradition.
In 1979, the existing sole proprietorship was converted into a family-owned corporation. In the same year, a plot of land in the Eichli industrial zone in Stans was purchased from the Stans Corporation. A new workshop and office building with the necessary infrastructure for the economic development of the company was built here.
In the 1980s, the second generation took over the operational management of the construction company. As managing director, Walter Murer, a federally certified master mason, brought the company to what it is today. His brothers Franz, Sepp, Ernst, and Kurt, as well as his sister Margrit, actively supported him. In 2013, the construction company was split into two independent stock corporations. Franz Murer - Odermatt Verwaltungs AG continues to be managed by the second generation.
The third generation took over the operational business of the construction company with the same name, Franz Murer-Odermatt AG. The share capital belongs to four people who are actively involved in the business. There are no noticeable changes for employees, customers, and suppliers. With this step, 65 years after the company was founded, we can tackle the future with confidence.
The third generation is full of enthusiasm for construction. Franco Murer has been a construction manager since 1994 and managing director since 2009, Kurt Murer has been a driver and all-rounder since 1977, Urs Murer has been a machinist/driver and mechanic since 1997, Franz Murer junior has been a foreman/machinist and crane operator since 2001, and Marc Murer has been a truck driver since 2013.
On January 13, 2020, our long-time managing director Walter Murer passed away at the age of 74 after more than two years of battling lung cancer. We will never forget him and thank him for everything he has done for us and the company.
Testimonials to the capabilities of our company include numerous residential buildings, extensions and conversions, customer projects, agricultural buildings, roads, stream construction, gravel processing, transport, and much more.
Despite the price war in the construction industry that has been going on for years, our company is confident about the future, even in 2022.
