Three quarters of a century of company history

 The history of our traditional painting business is also a small piece of "Basel history". It began in 1931, when Paul Barbey - grandfather and great-grandfather of the current owners - opened a painting studio on Maiengasse and quickly built up a considerable customer base thanks to his solid work. Apprentices were soon trained.

The "fleet of vehicles" was modest: the various work sites were reached by bicycle, and tools and materials were transported on a handcart.
 

The good reputation of Paul Barbey's painting business got around Basel, and the business survived the crisis and war years well. The studio on Maiengasse became too small, and in 1947 the company moved into its own premises at Allschwilerstrasse 67, where it is still based today.

There was still no motorized company vehicle, but the handcart now bore the company name "P. Barbey + Sohn".

To the delight of his grandfather and father, Nicolas Barbey became the third in the succession of generations to start an apprenticeship as a painter in his own company in 1956. He - the current senior owner - became the youngest federally certified master painter in 1964. The company was now renamed J. Barbey + Sohn.

During this time, the family business continued to develop and the customer base grew. New materials and modern technology  were introduced. The fourth generation grew up and joined the company. In 1996, the painting business, known far and wide for its solid work, was transformed into a limited company. A new company name reflects the bond between the generations: Barbey Söhne AG.

Whether kitchen, bathroom or living/dining area, whether wall, ceiling or door frame - with the right paint, we create the living atmosphere you want. Color consulting is our specialty, and on request we can develop a color concept for the entire house or apartment.

As an alternative to the conventional tiled bathroom, we also offer the "Ai Do" concept developed by the Dold company in Walisellen for the seamless design of bathroom worlds. The main advantages: emotional, almost limitless color design with hygienic, seamless design of the wall and ceiling surfaces. We are a certified partner of Dold AG.

There is also a little herb that grows against algae, moss and even paint spray. We know what it's called and how to use it. Ask us when it comes to the renovation or preventive protection of your façade.

We work with state-of-the-art equipment, for cleaning with the extremely effective and environmentally friendly "Krake 80" high-pressure cleaner.
