Classical Massage
Definition
The term "massage" refers to a mechanical, mainly manual influence of the skin, underlying tissue and muscles. Classical massage is the most widely used form of massage and is mainly used as a preventive measure or remedy against diseases of the musculoskeletal system.
Origin
Massage is one of the oldest therapeutic methods in the world. Forms of manipulation are described as early as 2600 BCE in some Chinese documents, while Indian medical art handed down the custom of practicing massage in combination with essential oils and herbs. Greek physicians Hippocrates (460-375 B.C.) and Galen (129-199 A.D.) contributed to the spread of massage in Europe, using it as a therapeutic tool, but its practice disappeared during the Middle Ages. It was not until the 16th century that the French surgeon Ambroise Paré (1510-1590) reintroduced massage as part of post-operative rehabilitation, bringing this type of treatment back into the world of medicine.
Swedish masseur Pehr Henrik Ling (1776-1839) is regarded as one of the fathers of classical massage techniques, which are widespread in the Western world today. That is why classical massage is also known by the name Swedish massage. Ling began his career as a fencing and gymnastics teacher at the Swedish University of Lund. In 1813 he founded the Central Institute of Gymnastics in Stockholm, where he devoted himself to developing and teaching a particular method of training. His gymnastic exercises soon became so popular that they were included in school and army curricula. Ling's directions also contained references to different types of manipulation, later taken up by Dutch physician Johan Georg Mezger (1839-1909) and German orthopedic surgeon Albert Hoffa (1859-1907), who developed the classical massage techniques in use today on this basis. Numerous other forms of massage emerged in the second half of the 20th century, including reflexology, connective tissue massage, and lymphatic drainage.
Classic massage is currently the most widely used form of manual therapy and is performed by specially trained massage therapists or physical therapists.
Fundamentals
In classical massage, pressure and traction stimuli are exerted on tissues and muscles with the hands. This is intended on the one hand to exert a direct influence on the body by stretching and relaxing muscles, increasing local blood circulation, and stimulating cellular metabolism. On the other hand, massage positively affects organic functions such as heart rate, blood pressure, respiration and digestion, thus promoting a general state of relaxation and well-being.
PLANTARY REFLEXOLOGY:
Definition
Foot reflexology is a special form of reflexology, involving the treatment of certain reflex zones of the feet.
Origin
Modern reflexology was developed by the American otolaryngologist William Fitzgerald (1872-1942), who in the early 1920s engaged in an in-depth study of the medical knowledge of the Native Americans, to whose traditional remedies certain forms of reflexology also belonged. Fitzgerald systematized and integrated the ancient traditions and developed his own method, which he presented in 1915 under the name "zonal therapy."
The method was called "zonal therapy.
In the 1930s, this method was taken up by American masseuse Eunice Ingham (1889-1974) and made accessible to the general public.
At that time in Europe the procedure known as "reflexology" was considered essentially a simplified method of self-treatment and health care. German masseuse Hanne Marquardt began in 1958 to regularly use this system for the targeted treatment of her patients, suffering from various diseases, and later founded her own training center. Today, reflexology is very widespread in Europe, where it is recognized as a differentiated therapy.
Fundamentals
Foot reflexology is based on the hologram of the body developed by Fitzgerald, which divides the body into ten vertical and three horizontal zones. Each vertical zone runs from the surface of the skull to the feet, passing through the fingers. A specific toe and hand belong to each zone. The horizontal zones, on the other hand, are formed by the head and neck at the top, the chest and abdomen in the middle, and the belly and pelvis at the bottom. On the basis of his own observations Fitzgerald concluded that from each point in a zone it was possible to influence all organs and body parts in that particular zone.
Eunice Ingham refined this theory, introducing the concept that each area of the body is reflected in a certain area or reflex point on the sole of the foot. The reflex zones of the organs of the head and neck are found, for example, in the toe area, the organs of the chest and abdomen in the midfoot area, and those of the belly and pelvis on the heel. Other reflex areas can be found on the outer and inner sides, as well as on the back of the foot. The general principle applies that the organs of the left half of the body correspond to the left foot and the organs of the right half to the right foot. On the basis of these correspondences, it is possible, by exerting targeted pressure on a reflex point of the foot, to treat a specific area of the body, even far away from it. The same principle can also be applied to the hands, in this case acting on the reflex points identified on the upper extremities.
MANUAL LYMPHODRENAGE
Definition
Manual lymphatic drainage is a special massage technique to remove accumulations of lymphatic fluid from tissues.
Origin
Manual lymphatic drainage technique was developed by Danish masseur and physiotherapist Emil Vodder (1896-1986), who during his work on the French Riviera in the early 1930s realized that he could heal chronic cold diseases by gently massaging the enlarged lymph nodes in the neck. From this experience he developed the method of manual lymphatic drainage. In 1936 Vodder first made his method known at the "Exposition de Beauté de Santé" in Paris. In 1958 he held his first manual lymphatic drainage course in Germany. In the following years the method gained increasing popularity, especially in Germany and Austria. Vodder founded the "Dr. Vodder Manual Lymph Drainage Society" and a school in the city of Essen. In the 1980s, through cooperation with the German Physical Therapy Association, it was possible to establish unified guidelines to regulate training in manual lymphatic drainage, which are still a guarantee of quality in German and Austrian schools today.
In the present day, manual lymphatic drainage is an integral part of physical therapy and is used primarily by massage therapists and physical therapists.
Fundamentals
The body's lymphatic vascular system collects tissue fluid (lymph) and conveys it to blood vessels. A functional deficit of this draining system, as a result of injury or surgery, results in the accumulation of fluid in the intercellular spaces, leading to swelling (edema). Manual lymphatic drainage is an intervention aimed at dissolving accumulations of lymphatic fluid through the stimulation of vessel activity, promoting the elimination of excess fluid in the tissues. Lymphatic drainage also has a strongly relaxing and calming action and stimulates the immune system. (Text taken from the RME/EMR empirical medicine website).
