1. Selection of the wood
A spruce is selected. Attention is paid to its location, that it has grown straight and has as few knots as possible.
After felling, a first wood sample is made by splitting and creating shingles and the wood is tested for its processing properties. Only then does the shingle maker know whether the trunk is suitable for making shingles.
We source our wood for shingle production from the surrounding forests in the region.
2. So-called "Rugel" are sawn from the trunk. This process results in the final raw length of the wooden shingle.
3. Splitting technique
The sawn-off "Rugel" is split towards the center. Pieces containing knots are split out and discarded during this process.
The wedge-shaped piece of wood is measured with the help of the measuring gauge and then split further. This process also determines the width of the wooden shingle. The result is the so-called "Mösel". The larger the diameter of the log, the more "Mösel" can be split out of one piece.
4. Cutting
The Mösel is further processed and cut to size by hand. The bark is removed and the Mösel is cut to a slightly conical shape. The Mösel that has no bark is also cut slightly tapered. This makes further splitting easier later on. The larger the diameter of the log, the more "Mösel" can be split out of one piece.
5. Shingle production
By precisely positioning the shingle knife and hitting it with a mallet, the knife is driven into the "Mösel". By then tilting the sharp shingle knife, the shingle is halved, quartered, etc. until the pieces become too thin to be split further in this way.
After the shingles have been hammered in with the shingle knife, they are divided by gently pulling them apart until the desired shingle thickness is achieved.
6. Storage
The shingles are bundled for storage and then air-dried for approx. 2 months.
