Gestalt Therapy – practical information
- Creation
Stemming from humanistic and existential psychology, Gestalt therapy was created in 1951 by Frederick Perls (1893–1970), a German neuropsychoanalyst German neuropsychoanalyst, Laura Perls (1905–1990), German doctor of psychology and psychoanalyst, and Paul Goodman (1911–1972), philosopher and writer.
Gestalt therapy is the result of the convergence of several schools of thought: psychoanalytic approaches (S. Freud, W. Reich, O. Rank), Gestalt theory or psychology of form, phenomenology, holism, existentialism, humanism, etc.
- How?
As part of an individualized therapeutic relationship in which the therapist is personally involved, change comes from experimenting with new behaviors discovered here and now in a relationship of trust where the quality of contact is privileged.
The client is active and responsible (rather than a passive "patient"). They explore their bodily sensations, desires, fantasies, emotions, past, and desired future, giving them a dynamic form aimed at transforming their existence. They are in control and increasingly decide for themselves the direction they wish to take. There is no "normality" to achieve or predetermined goal. Gestalt therapy respects each person's journey and uniqueness.
The therapeutic work will involve physical, emotional, affective, and mental exploration and will focus much more on the "how" than on the "why."
- Who is it for?
Gestalt therapy is particularly recommended for people seeking fulfillment and a better understanding of themselves, those going through a difficult period (bereavement, loneliness, separation), those experiencing family or educational difficulties, professional problems such as harassment, unemployment, or those suffering from anxiety, mood disorders (aggression, irritability, depression), psychosomatic physical problems (back pain, migraines, digestive problems), eating disorders, people who are depressed or experiencing sexual difficulties.
