The pleasure of cooking
A great passion for cooking and delicate flavors
Our chef Stefano Burkhalter, current manager and head chef of the Costa Azzurra, discovered his passion for cooking very early on. In 1983 he began his apprenticeship as a cook at Lüscherz near Lake Biel, finishing it in 1986, the year he arrived in Ticino. Until 1990 he worked at the Albergo della Posta in Locarno-Monti while serving in the military as head chef.
That same year, he finally came to the French Riviera. He started as a cook, becoming head chef two years later. On March 1, 2017, when the Schwyn family, owners of the restaurant, decided to enjoy retirement, Stephen took on the role of manager and kitchen chief. As service manager and right hand, he relies on the valuable work of the former owners' daughter: Manuela Schwyn. Since 2018 he has joined the Gilde of restaurants.
Stefano loves to travel and explore the culinary culture of the places he visits. Wherever he goes, he ends up taking something with him to use in the kitchen: a new recipe or a new ingredient to use on his dishes to create new, tasty flavor combinations.
The history of the Costa Azzurra Restaurant
The history of the Costa Azzurra Restaurant began in the 1950s and was acquired by the Schwyn family in 1988. After a complete renovation, carried out with great passion and enthusiasm, the reopening was celebrated in June 1989.
With time thanks to continuous improvement investments, the Restaurant has become a small jewel in which traditional furniture elements are blended together with more modern elements. A really successful mix that makes the environment warm and welcoming.
Since March 2017, the Costa Azzurra Restaurant has been managed by our Chef de Cuisine Stefan Burkhalter in an excellent way.
In addition to the indoor environment, the Restaurant also has a large and lovely outdoor space for the warmer periods, rich in vegetation and with granite tables, where it is possible to spend unique moments outdoors listening to the relaxing sound of the waters of the Maggia River that flows nearby the restaurant. An ideal setting to feel like in the valley despite being in close proximity to the city.
