General eye examination, general ophthalmology

A general eye examination is important for the early detection of eye diseases. The various examination methods we use are part of our daily routine, which allows us to draw on our wealth of experience. A comprehensive assessment of your eye health is important to us, as it has a direct influence on the course of any incipient problems. This includes defective vision such as short-sightedness, long-sightedness or presbyopia as well as diseases of the optic nerves or corneal diseases.

Cataract (cataract)

Cataracts are also known as cataracts. It is a clouding of the lens caused by protein deposits. It can be caused by complications following treatment with cortisone, an accident or the normal ageing process. Congenital clouding of the lens is rare. Symptoms such as a decrease in visual acuity, glare or a fading of colors are often only noticed after a certain stage. Cataracts can be operated on by replacing the clouded lens with an artificial lens. This is a short routine procedure with low risks. Patients who have been diagnosed with cataracts and decide to undergo surgery are operated on by experienced ophthalmologists in the Bern area. We are happy to accompany you before and after the operation and take care of post-cataract treatment using the Ellex YAG laser.

Increased eye pressure, glaucoma

Ocular pressure can increase with age because the changes in the chamber angle or other "canalization" no longer function optimally. The structure of the inner eye fluid usually remains unchanged throughout life. Increased eye pressure can therefore occur. In the case of increased eye pressure, the optic nerve can be damaged in the long term. Increased eye pressure with damage to the optic nerve head or fibers (glaucoma) is also known as glaucoma. Most cases of glaucoma are only noticed at an advanced stage if they are not checked by an ophthalmologist, as it is often only then that symptoms occur. Regular ophthalmological examinations can detect increased eye pressure, detect and treat glaucoma at an early stage and prevent serious damage to the optic nerve. From diagnosis to treatment, we support you with our specialist knowledge.

Young patients are also welcome at our practice. Most children are aged 7 and over. In emergency situations or on referral, we also treat children under 7 years of age.

What is an eye emergency? Eye emergencies that we treat in our practice include eye pain, sudden loss of vision, a veil on the eye, conjunctivitis, uveitis, foreign bodies in the eye or clarification of a suspected retinal detachment. We are happy to help you in these cases.
