Summer wines: SARABANDA 2015, LA PIANA 2015, and CRESPERINO 2014
Dear Wine Lovers,
Our lives are in harmony with nature—rainy days alternate with sunny ones—and the small, still green grapes are developing very well.
After the excellent 2015 vintage, we are proud of our new cuvées, which have turned out very well and have a beautiful bouquet. The numerous visitors to the Open Cellars last May can confirm this.
Summer wines
SARABANDA (Merlot white) and LA PIANA (Sauvignon Blanc) are the ideal choice for a pleasant outdoor aperitif on hot summer days. To follow, for the barbecue, we suggest our CRESPERINO (Merlot) or RISERVA ERNESTO (Merlot/Cabernet blend).
A newcomer to the team
Luca Calderara, originally from Varese, has always had a passion for nature and the mountains. As part of his studies at the University of Agriculture in Milan, he started working at the Agriloro winery in Arzo. Since 2003, he has gained extensive experience in vineyards and has been working at the estate since March 2016. Among our wines, he has a preference for TRE API - a pure Merlot made from our oldest vines. This wine is ideal with excellent grilled meat.

ESTATE
The Bally & von Teufenstein Estate is not only a wine-growing estate but also a complete agricultural property covering 80 hectares. In addition to the vineyards, fields are cultivated and livestock is raised. In addition to wine, corn, potatoes, cereals, soybeans, and vegetables are also produced.
The estate was founded and cultivated in 1917 by shoe manufacturer Ernst Otto Bally, who undoubtedly possessed a pioneering spirit accompanied by a highly forward-thinking personality. He purchased a group of adjacent plots of land from various owners, located on the left bank of the Vedeggio river before it flows into Lake Lugano, not far from Agno. After several years of work to improve its quality, this wet alluvial land, which was not highly regarded by the locals, was able to produce good yields.
The property includes the Crespera moraine ridge on the south and southwest sides, where vineyards were planted and quickly took root with great success. Immediately after the destruction caused by phylloxera, Ernesto Otto Bally refused to use any of the many other varieties proposed to rebuild the devastated vineyards. With clear foresight, he planted native Merlot vines.
The Bally & von Teufenstein Estate is now owned by Ernst Otto Bally's grandchildren: the von Teufenstein and Bally families.
The vineyard covers an area of 6.5 hectares. It now also includes the small plateau overlooking the amphitheater-shaped slope. In the 1980s, new strategic guidelines were adopted. The traditional Merlot Cresperino was modified, thanks to a longer and more rigorous vinification process. The wine acquired a more solid tannic structure. The typical character of the Crespera ridge soil became more pronounced, giving the wine its slightly smoky, wild, and mineral notes that make it recognizable even in a blind tasting.

New to the team
Luca Calderara from Varese has always had a passion for nature and the mountains. After finishing school, he started working at Agriloro in Arzo. This was one of the reasons he chose to study at the Università d'Agraria di Milano. After 16 years of experience in the vineyards, he has been working at the estate since March 2016. Among our wines, he has a particular fondness for TRE API - a 100% Merlot from our oldest vines. This wine is ideal with a fine piece of meat on the grill - another of Luca's passions.

Wine Farm
The Bally & von Teufenstein estate is not purely a wine-growing business, but a complete agricultural estate covering an area of eighty hectares. In addition to viticulture, the estate also engages in arable farming and dairy cattle breeding. It produces wine, but also seed corn, potatoes, grain, soybeans, and field vegetables.
It was founded and built in 1917 by shoe manufacturer Ernst Otto Bally, a visionary personality with an impressive pioneering spirit. Ernst Otto Bally purchased a rounded unit of contiguous plots of land from various owners in the valley of the Vedeggio River, which flows into Lake Lugano near Agno. The wet alluvial land, which was unpopular with local farmers, yielded good returns after years of improvement work.
The property also includes the left-hand slope of Crespera, where viticulture soon became established on the south- and southwest-facing soil on moraine deposits. Ernst Otto Bally had Merlot vines planted there with wise foresight – at a time when, after the devastating phylloxera epidemic, this grape variety was still competing with numerous other varieties for dominance in the newly replanted vineyards.
Today, Tenuta Bally & von Teufenstein is privately owned by the grandchildren's generation: the von Teufenstein and Bally families.
The vineyard covers 6.5 hectares. It now also covers the small plateau behind the amphitheater-shaped steep slope. In the 1980s, a new course was set. The Merlot Cresperino, which was already being produced at the time, was given a new profile. Longer, harder pressing gave the wine a more solid tannin structure. The distinctive soil character of the Crespera hill became more pronounced, giving the wine that wild, smoky, mineral, "earthy" note that allows reliable conclusions to be drawn about its identity even when tasted without knowledge of the label.
