CAD/CAM dentures
CAD/CAM dentures refer to the production of crowns, bridges or implant accessories using computer-aided technology. Both the design (CAD: Computer Aided Design) and the production (CAM: Computer Aided Manufacturing) are carried out with the help of intelligent software programs and milling units networked with them.
The prerequisite for this was the rapid developments in computer technology over the last few decades, which enable complicated program controls to be coupled with milling machines with extended movement options. Initially developed for the aerospace and automotive industries, the technology was eventually adopted in modern dental technology.
CAD/CAM technology can cover all work steps from capturing the surface of the prepared (ground) tooth to milling the workpiece. First, the preparation must be transferred three-dimensionally. The workpiece is then designed, taking into account the positional relationship to the neighboring teeth and the teeth of the opposing jaw. Finally, the design is transferred to the workpiece by a milling robot.
While dental restorations in the posterior region are often made monolithically (from a single piece), crowns and bridges in the more aesthetically demanding anterior region are usually made by first fabricating a CAD/CAM framework and then veneering it with ceramic materials. This veneer is still applied and fired by hand by an experienced dental technician in several layers of color.
CAD/CAM technology has advanced the use of high-quality, biocompatible ceramic materials (feldspar, glass-ceramic, lithium disilicate, zirconium dioxide). However, cobalt-chromium alloys, plastics and biocompatible titanium can also be processed using CAD/CAM technology.
