The practice is located in the city center at 8 Via Pioda in Lugano, 50 meters from the Balestra car park, and was established in 1998 by owner Dr. Giulio Airoldi after graduating in 1992 and doing postgraduate professional training from 1992 to 1998 at the University of Zurich in oral surgery, implantology, fixed and removable reconstructions, and receiving a postgraduate training certificate in oral implantology in 2012.

What is implantology?
Implantology is that branch of dentistry that deals with the replacement of one or more lost teeth by means of osseointegrated implants.
A dental implant is a titanium or titanium-zirconium screw inserted into the bone under local anesthesia, thus painless. This screw serves as an artificial root to later attach single crowns or fixed bridges of 3 or more units or be used as an anchor for removable total dentures.
In most cases, a titanium screw is used, a material that is very well tolerated by the body and is particularly durable.
Implants can also be inserted if the condition of the bone is not favorable. In that case, however, bone reconstruction will be necessary before or at the same time as implant placement, depending on the patient's clinical situation.
The most common postoperative complications of implant surgery are bleeding, swelling, hematoma, and pain. Postoperative pain is only a few days and subsides with pain-relieving therapy. Antibiotic therapy lasting about a week is often indicated to avoid infection.
About 7-12 days after insertion of the titanium screw into the bone, the wound is checked and stitches are removed.
Healing time for implants is usually 6-12 weeks, with bone reconstruction it is extended to 4-6 months. After healing, the implants have achieved osseointegration, that is, a direct connection between the patient's bone and the implant titanium has occurred, capable of imparting a stable and durable anchorage, and loading of the implants with fixed or removable teeth can proceed. In special cases, the implants can be loaded immediately, so the prosthetic reconstruction (fixed or removable) is placed immediately or a few weeks after implantation, with a significant reduction in the duration of treatment and greater comfort for the patient.
Tooth reconstruction on implants is done in several sessions with impressions, tooth testing, and mounting the teeth on implants.
Several long-term studies have shown that the durability of modern implants is high, and after ten hanni the success rate averages about 95%. In at-risk patients, such as smokers or diabetics who are not under control, the risk of loss is significantly higher (about 20 percent greater).
The success and durability of implant therapy depends significantly on the maintenance therapy provided by the dentist and particularly the dental hygienist (at least semiannual sessions) and good daily oral hygiene practiced by the patient. Lack of care can contribute to inflammatory processes, as is the case with natural teeth. Such inflammation is characterized by bleeding gums, pocket formation around implants, and bone loss around implants (periimplantitis) and must be diagnosed and treated promptly.
There is no age limit for implant placement unless the patient has significant clinical risk factors (e.g., immunosuppression) and impaired healing. The minimum age to undergo implant surgery is about 18 to 20 years, after growth is complete.
The cost of implant surgery varies depending on the complexity of the case, e.g., the number of implants required, the type of healing (subgingival or not), the need for bone augmentation, and the type of implant reconstruction (generally fixed more expensive than removable). In any case after case evaluation and planning a written cost estimate including dentist, dental technician and materials is always set up and given to the patient.
