The practice is located in the city center at Via Pioda 8 in Lugano, 50 meters from the Balestra parking garage. and was founded in 1998 by its owner, Dr. Giulio Airoldi, after graduating in 1992 and completing a period of postgraduate professional training from 1992 to 1998 at the University of Zurich in oral surgery, implantology, fixed and removable reconstructions, and obtaining a postgraduate certificate in oral implantology in 2012.
Therapies:
In addition to therapies such as prophylaxis, aesthetic composite fillings, ceramic veneers, ceramic inlays, nerve treatments, periodontology, oral surgery, cosmetic dentistry, and teeth whitening, the practice has a particular focus on oral implantology.
Oral implantology
Fixed (crowns/bridges) and removable (anchored prostheses) reconstructions on teeth and implants.
The practice employs two qualified dental hygienists.
Since 2000, Dr. Caroline Airoldi-Mäder has been practicing orthodontics for children and adults after completing a specialization in orthodontics at the University of Zurich.
What is implantology?
Implantology is the branch of dentistry that deals with replacing one or more lost teeth with osseointegrated implants.
A dental implant is a titanium or titanium-zirconium screw inserted into the bone under local anesthesia, making the procedure painless. This screw acts as an artificial root for subsequently fixing single crowns or fixed bridges with 3 or more elements, or it can be used as an anchor for removable full dentures.
In most cases, a titanium screw is used, as this material is very well tolerated by the body and is particularly resistant.
Implants can also be inserted even if the bone conditions are not favorable. In this case, however, it will be necessary to resort to bone reconstruction before or at the same time as the insertion of the implant, depending on the patient's clinical situation.
The most common postoperative complications of implant surgery are bleeding, swelling, hematoma, and pain. The pain following the operation lasts only a few days and can be relieved with pain medication. To prevent infection, a week-long course of antibiotics is often recommended.
Approximately 7-12 days after the titanium screw is inserted into the bone, the wound is checked and the stitches are removed.
Implants generally take 6-12 weeks to heal, with bone reconstruction extending this to 4-6 months. After healing, the implants have achieved osseointegration, i.e., a direct connection has been established between the patient's bone and the titanium of the implant, providing stable and lasting anchorage, and the implants can be loaded with fixed or removable teeth. In special cases, the implants can be loaded immediately, so the prosthetic reconstruction (fixed or removable) is inserted immediately or a few weeks after implantation, significantly reducing the duration of treatment and increasing patient comfort.
The reconstruction of teeth on implants takes place over several sessions involving impressions, tooth tests, and the fitting of teeth on implants.
Several long-term studies have shown that modern implants have a long lifespan and after ten years the success rate is on average around 95%. In high-risk patients, such as smokers or uncontrolled diabetics, the risk of loss is significantly higher (around 20% higher).
The success and durability of implant therapy depend significantly on maintenance therapy provided by the dentist and especially by the dental hygienist (at least every six months) and on good daily oral hygiene practiced by the patient. Lack of care can contribute to the onset of inflammatory processes, as is the case with natural teeth. These inflammations are characterized by bleeding gums, the formation of pockets around the implants, and bone loss around the implants (peri-implantitis) and must be diagnosed and treated promptly.
There is no age limit for implant placement unless the patient has significant clinical risk factors (e.g., immunosuppression) and healing is impaired. The minimum age for implant surgery is approximately 18-20 years, once growth is complete.
The costs of implant surgery vary depending on the complexity of the case, for example, the number of implants required, the type of healing (subgingival or not), the need for bone reconstruction, and the type of implant restoration (generally fixed restorations are more expensive than removable ones). In any case, after the evaluation and planning of the case, a written estimate of the costs, including the dentist, dental technician, and materials, is always prepared and delivered to the patient.
