First visit
The appropriate treatment of dental and periodontal diseases is based on the correct diagnosis. To this end, during the first visit, in addition to the medical and dental history and recognition of the patient's expectations, radiological checks and clinical detection of the possible presence of caries, gingivitis, periodontitis and any other pathologies such as abrasions dental, gingival recession, joint, functional and aesthetic problems are carried out.
The duration of the visit can vary, depending on the complexity of the case, from half an hour to one hour.
The combination of all these data then allows the planning of one or more personalized therapies with corresponding estimates.
For young patients, up to the age of 25, who have no special problems, the first visit, including the dentist's check-up, can be carried out directly by the dental hygienist who will perform, in addition to the normal prophylaxis session, 4 simple endoral radiographs (Bite-wings) for intercepting any caries.
Dental Diagnostics
In order to determine the most appropriate treatments for the individual patient, we make use of the following diagnostic procedures as needed:
- endoral radiographs for the detection of caries, endodontic and periodontal lesions
- panoramic radiography: for complex reconstructive therapies, implantology and jaw pathologies
- the diagnodent: the laser for evaluation of initial caries
- the gingival bleeding index: detects the efficiency of oral hygiene performed by the patient himself
- periodontal finding: detects the presence of periodontal pockets (periodontitis) and/or gingival recession
- microbiological examinations
Treatment plan and preliminary therapy
The initial information gathered from clinical and radiological examinations allows the formation of an initial course of treatment aimed primarily at the elimination of acute and/or painful oral infections and deep carious dental lesions.
The patient receives an initial treatment plan, accompanied by therapeutic cost and timing.
Cause therapy and home oral hygiene
Before starting any restorative therapy, it is necessary to eliminate all dental and periodontal pathologies.
Only a healthy mouth can be rehabilitated in a proper way and kept that way over time.
The causal therapy aims to:
- motivate the patient and instruct them in proper daily oral hygiene
- eliminate dental plaque and surface tartar
- eliminate, where necessary, subgingival tartar and smooth root surfaces
- control of systemic diseases (e.g., diabetes, osteoporosis, etc.) and harmful lifestyles (e.g., smoking, alcohol, etc.), disorders and eating habits (e.g., bulimia, anorexia, excessive sugar consumption, etc.)
Reassessment and treatment plan
A dependence on the pathologies present the treatment plan is structured in different stages and an initial estimate is prepared.
At the end of each stage, a re-evaluation of the case must be carried out to confirm or modify subsequent treatment.
When preliminary and causal therapy is completed, a clinical check-up is conducted to decide on the necessary dental treatment (mainly fillings and root canal treatment).
Then the need for periodontal care (periodontal surgery is considered and its timing.
At the end of these therapeutic steps, further reevaluation of the case is necessary. At this point only in the absence of pathology ( caries and/or periodontitis) is possible to proceed with the final planning of reconstructions (crowns, bridges, implants, removable prostheses) and determine the actual costs.
Maintenance phase (Recall)
.To maintain oral health and the results of treatment over time, it is necessary to provide regular checkups, usually performed by a licensed dental hygienist. The Recall session is essentially a causal matched therapy, individualized as needed. The periodicity varies from 3 to 12 months and can last from 30 to 60 minutes depending on the dental and/or periodontal situation.
Depending on the complexity of the case, it is essential to schedule Recall as early as after causal therapy so that oral hygiene can also be monitored during all subsequent therapeutic phases.
