What is orthodontics?
Orthodontics is the study of the detection, prophylaxis and treatment of misaligned teeth and/or jaws.
What is an orthodontist?
Orthodontists are dentists who have completed several years of postgraduate training at an orthodontic university institute after completing their basic dental studies and are qualified to treat misaligned teeth and jaws.
Swissortho provides further information on specialization and obtaining the title of Specialist / Specialist Dentist SSO in Orthodontics.
What is the aim of orthodontic treatment?
The goal of orthodontic treatment is a functionally good and aesthetically pleasing set of teeth that is in harmony with the face.
When should orthodontic treatment be started?
This depends on what the problem is. The first fixed point is the completed eruption of the front teeth in both jaws. This is usually the case for boys and girls at the age of 8. At this point, you should present the child to the orthodontist, who can then decide what the problem is and how and when treatment is sensible and necessary.
A basic distinction is made between the
- Treatment in childhood
- Treatment during adolescence
- Adult treatment
Do all children need to see an orthodontist?
No. However, it has been shown that around half of all children require orthodontic treatment.
Is prophylaxis/prevention possible?
The best prophylaxis is good oral hygiene, which prevents tooth decay and the subsequent loss of milk teeth. Healthy milk teeth can perform their placeholder function and generally promote an orderly change of teeth. Thumb-sucking can contribute to the reinforcement of an existing malocclusion. There are also malocclusions that are hereditary and not amenable to prophylaxis.
Is there an age limit for orthodontic treatment?
In principle, no. As explained for adult treatment, orthodontic treatment can be started at any age.
How long does orthodontic treatment last?
Active orthodontic treatment, i.e. the time during which the teeth and/or jaws are moved and braces are worn, usually lasts 2-3 years. Following this phase, the achieved results must be secured in a retention or stabilization phase lasting several years.
Do permanent teeth have to be removed?
This depends on the individual circumstances. In some patients, the extent of the lack of space is such that it is not possible to fit all the teeth into the dental arch. The removal of permanent teeth must be carefully considered and planned against the background of possible negative effects on the patient's profile. The necessity of such measures must also be discussed in detail with the patient or their parents.
Does the treatment hurt?
After the insertion of orthodontic treatment appliances, a 1-2 week familiarization phase must be expected. During this time, there may be pain in the area of the teeth as well as the lips, cheeks and tongue.
Are there any treatment risks?
The greatest risk, especially with fixed appliances, is tooth decay. Inadequate or even absent oral hygiene leads to decalcification of the enamel surface and carious destruction of the tooth structure. For this reason, good oral hygiene is essential. Other risks can include root shortening, which can be detected with regular X-ray checks.
