Village of the vine

The landmark of Thal, the Buechberg, with the Steinig Tisch panoramic restaurant, is impossible to miss. It offers an incomparable view of the Appenzell Vorderland, Lake Constance, and far into Germany and Austria. The extensive vineyards on the southern slope of the Buechberg have earned Thal the nickname "Village of the Vine."

The municipal administration is based in the town hall, in the row of houses on Kirchplatz square, which is listed as a historic monument. The neighboring parish church, with its Gothic choir and Baroque interior, tells a thousand-year history. Its foundations date back to the 7th century.

In the village of Thal, students from across the municipality attend secondary school.
Retirement and nursing homes offer good care and enable residents to remain in familiar surroundings even in old age.

The village is also characterized by viticulture and the local museum, which is located right next to the traditional Ochsen restaurant.

In mid-November, Thal hosts the latest annual fair in eastern Switzerland. A large wine festival is organized at longer intervals.
