Lightning protection systems must protect buildings and installations as well as the people inside them from the effects of lightning strikes.

Lightning protection systems must conduct the lightning current into the ground along harmless paths.

They consist of external lightning protection (air-termination system, arrester, earthing) and internal lightning protection (equipotential bonding).
