Moment Café

Bäumleingasse 4, 4051 Basel

Our café is a place of peace and mindful retreat – a space to reconnect with yourself, gain new insights, and nurture your inner balance. A Place of Peace and Inspiration The MOMENT Café is a quiet oasis in the heart of the city, dedicated to relaxation and mindfulness. Here, there is no music, and conversations are intentionally kept minimal. Our café offers not only a retreat from daily life but also a space for inner reflection, contemplation, and creative inspiration. Amid the urban hustle and bustle, MOMENT Café invites you to experience the present moment mindfully and unwind in a peaceful atmosphere. Sustainability and Mindfulness MOMENT Café stands for sustainability, mindfulness, and a conscious lifestyle. We promote a culture of respectful and thoughtful interaction with both people and the environment. The neutral design of our space is deliberately free from religious or spiritual symbols, ensuring that it is welcoming to all, regardless of age, faith, or worldview, offering everyone a place for peace and reflection. Library in the Tea Café In collaboration with the GGG City Library Basel, MOMENT Café features a carefully curated library of books on philosophy and spirituality. These works can be enjoyed in the café’s tranquil ambiance. Library members have the opportunity to borrow books, and the café also offers a selection of in-house books and magazines for guests to enjoy during their visit. Room of Silence: Meditation and Reflection Adjacent to the tea café is the "Room of Silence" – a special place for meditation, reflection, and inner stillness. The simple space is equipped with mats, cushions, and benches, providing the ideal setting for personal meditation practice. Guests are invited to use the space during opening hours and may contribute voluntarily to its upkeep. Outside of regular hours, the room is available for meditation events and courses. Introduction to Meditation Courses We offer regular introduction courses to meditation, held approximately six times a year over three consecutive Wednesday evenings. These courses are ideal for beginners and teach fundamental meditation techniques to integrate mindfulness and peace into everyday life. Experienced practitioners will also find valuable insights to deepen their practice. After the courses, guests can join in for tea and conversation. Products for Enjoyment at Home For those who wish to continue their relaxation at home, we offer a selection of premium teas, organic herbal teas, traditional Panettone, and inspirational cards, all available for purchase in the café. These products reflect the MOMENT Café's philosophy and invite guests to integrate peace and mindfulness into their daily routines. Events and Room Rental MOMENT Café is also available for events with up to 50 guests. The space is suitable for a variety of occasions, such as readings, concerts, lectures, workshops, team events, or family celebrations. The "Room of Silence" is ideal for meditation courses, yoga, and therapy sessions. Current events include the book club "Reading the World," Holistic Yoga Basel, Katerina Wen Yoga, and the Contemplation Group of the ARS VITAE association.

Parterre Basel From an informal youth center café to an SME The history of the Parterre Basel is a long one, and one spurred by social engagement. In 1942, the BFA (Basler Freizeitaktion, engl. “Basel Recreational Activities”) was founded with the goal of establishing an open youth work center. The idea was to offer diversion for the youth during the hard times of the on-going war — such as workshops and open meeting points, but also activities such as choirs, hiking, and trips. Today, the BFA still operates several youth centers and activities, albeit now as JuAr Basel. In 1975, the BFA opens the “Kaffi Schlappe” next to the Kaserne, including a youth counselling center, probably one of the first of its kind in Switzerland. Since 1992, the restaurant has continuously been developed and expanded according to economic criteria. With the takeover of the premises previously used by the GGG library on the first floor/ground floor, the restaurant now stands on its own feet as a business. In 1999, the Restaurant Parterre is opened, replacing the “Kaffi” but still keeping the aspects of social engagement and youth work in place. The business behind the restaurant is accordingly called Parterre Basel but still run by the BFA. Over the next few years, the company expands further, incorporating more subsectors to its business areas. Amongst others, laundry and cleaning services are now offered, and a buvette (an outdoor snack bar) is opened during the summer months on the Rhine bank. Additionally, the restaurant Rialto (2003) and the event hall Querfeld (2007) have been taken over as venues, which is another step for the Parterre Basel to become an SME. As you can see, the formerly socially engaged youth center has become a profit-oriented and economically minded business with a focus on cultural and social engagement. In 2006, the BFA hands over the Parterre Basel business to four private investors. As a result, the previously established business was split into the Parterre AG (Gastronomy, cultural arts, events), and Parterre Tangram (social engagement, work integration, etc.) Mid-2015 sees another change that is indicative of future developments. Yvonne Hürlimann-Hockenjos, the long-standing patron, is now joint owner of the afore-mentioned established businesses, together with Peter Sterli und Roland Aebi. In addition, Yvonne Hürlimann-Hockenjos’ granddaughter, Diane Hürlimann, has been delegated to the Board of Directors and the shareholders’ meeting/committee.
