Medical diagnostics and therapy are based on the modern possibilities of scientific medicine. As the first anthroposophic clinic in the world, the Arlesheim Clinic has almost 100 years of experience with the integrative concept of anthroposophic medicine.

We are a clinic for internal medicine, oncology, and psychiatry. We also offer a wide range of outpatient services, including an outpatient branch in Basel, the Ita Wegman Ambulatorium.

The emergency department specializes in the treatment of acute internal medical conditions such as cardiac emergencies, respiratory problems, abdominal complaints, inflammation, fever, and pain. For emergencies that require surgical or intensive care, we work together with the hospitals in Dornach, Bruderholz, and the University Hospital of Basel. A team of nurses, assistant doctors, specialists, and medical practice assistants ensures that the emergency department is ready for action around the clock. Monitors, ECG, ultrasound, laboratory, X-ray, emergency medication, and other equipment are available for diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment. Anthroposophic medicines and therapeutic wraps are also used.

Internal medicine
Our internal medicine ward with 22 beds (one 3-bed room, otherwise 2- and 1-bed rooms) is located in the Wegman building. We have a cantonal service mandate for neurology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, cardiology (including pacemakers), pneumology, and rheumatology. The ward has beds for all insurance classes.

Cardiology
All non-invasive cardiological examinations are performed in the cardiology department, e.g.

• Bicycle ergometry
• 24-hour ECG
• R test (event ECG)
• 24-hour blood pressure
• Echocardiography
• Stress echocardiography
• Transesophageal echocardiography
• Pacemaker check

For more advanced technical examinations, our collaboration with the cardiology department at the Cantonal Hospital Basel and Bruderholz has proven very successful.

Pulmonology
We primarily treat patients with asthma, COPD, emphysema, bronchiectasis, pulmonary fibrosis, and sarcoidosis.

We perform the following examinations for diagnosis and follow-up:

• Lung function tests
• Imaging procedures
• Arterial blood gas analyses (and pleural punctures if necessary)
• Pleural punctures

Depending on the indication, medication, inhalations, external applications, respiratory physiotherapy, rhythmic massage, eurythmy therapy, speech therapy, and art therapy are used for treatment.

Registrations for lung function tests are accepted by the specialist outpatient clinic office.

Neurology
The neurology outpatient clinic offers various examinations and therapies in clinical neurophysiology and behavioral neurology.

Oncology
If you have cancer, we are here for you and will support you through all phases of treatment and all stages of the disease. We perform all standard chemotherapy, antibody therapy, and other systemic tumor therapies on an outpatient basis or, if necessary, on an inpatient basis. In addition, our experienced team of doctors has many years of experience in anthroposophic medicine and, in particular, integrative oncology.

If cancer is understood not only as a local event, but as a disease of the whole person, treatment approaches are needed that promote healing and strengthen the immune system. In this context, differentiated mistletoe therapy is an essential and, thanks to numerous clinical studies, scientifically well-supported pillar of comprehensive integrative oncological treatment. Mistel therapy strengthens and harmonizes the body's heat regulation, which is often impaired in cancer patients, depending on the dosage, even to the point of inducing a (desirable) fever. The many effects of mistel therapy on the immune system have been well researched and have a positive impact on the patient's well-being and the course of the disease.

However, heat production is also supported by external applications such as wraps, compresses, and rubs, which are regularly used on our patients. The high level of expertise of our nursing staff, who are trained in integrative medicine, contributes significantly to the self-determined recovery of our patients. In addition, we offer a wide range of artistic therapies, psycho-oncological care, and physiotherapeutic applications, which are used in a targeted manner and carried out within the clinic.
We thus offer a comprehensive, holistic therapy concept that can prevent, heal, or, in advanced situations, significantly improve quality of life.
Our oncology department has a large consultation room, a day clinic, and a ward with 15 beds.

 

Psychiatry/psychosomatics

In our inpatient and outpatient psychiatry and psychosomatics departments, we care for adults aged 18 and over with psychiatric and psychosomatic conditions.
The focus is on finding an individual way of dealing with illness and crisis. This is often a process that brings the body into harmony with the mental and emotional levels.

Medical care is complemented by close support from the nursing team, which is available around the clock and can therefore be contacted at any time, even in crisis situations. Each patient is accompanied by a treatment team consisting of a senior physician, an assistant physician, and two reference nurses. The treatment team works with the patient to define treatment goals and measures.
An important part of the treatment consists of anthroposophic artistic and body-oriented therapies, which are carried out as individual therapy or in small groups.
The therapy program is supplemented by group activities and joint activities on the ward.

The length of stay is determined on an individual basis. Stress tests are part of the therapeutic program to facilitate reintegration into the home environment.

Psychiatry
The psychiatric department is run as an open ward with 22 beds. It is a general psychiatric department and does not focus on specific clinical pictures. All psychiatric clinical pictures are treated.

Psychosomatics
The psychosomatic department has 20 beds for people with psychosomatic illnesses.
Psychosomatics often deals with life and orientation crises accompanied by insomnia or depressive symptoms, pain, skin rashes, digestive disorders, or weight loss, etc., which have no underlying somatic causes.

General medicine (practice at Pfeffingerhof, Stollenrain 11)
True healing is infinitely multifaceted and complex. We take the time for it. We see the principle of anthroposophic medicine in the fact that illness enables new stages of development. By overcoming illness, new abilities can be acquired on a physical, mental, or spiritual level.
Only a holistic perception of the illness broadens the scope for therapy.

 

Gynecology (Practice at Pfeffingerhof, Stollenrain 11)
Our services include annual check-ups, contraceptive counseling, diagnosis and treatment of gynecological diseases and changes in the female breast.

Pregnant women are accompanied as part of prenatal care.

Treatment is based on a detailed consultation and, depending on the situation, subsequent examinations, including ultrasound if necessary. In consultation with the patient, an anthroposophic treatment approach is often chosen for therapy.

 

Pediatric medicine (practice at Pfeffingerhof, Stollenrain 11)
Medical treatment and care for children of all ages and their families – tailored to the individual needs of the child.
In addition to official preventive medical checkups and the treatment and care of acute and chronic illnesses, special consultation hours focusing on the anthroposophic treatment of diseases such as allergies, asthma, ADHD, pediatric oncology, and developmental pediatrics complement the range of services.
We consider it important to promote the development of patients in a child- and family-friendly manner, to accompany them and to treat them. To this end, we also include counseling services regarding education and care measures.
