Traditional Chinese medicine is now widely accepted and recognized by health insurance companies. The medical system on which Chinese medicine practiced today is based developed around the 5th century BC: it was influenced both by the ideas of the teacher Confucius (such as "yin and yang" and "the five phases of transformation") and by Taoism ("living with and in the flow of nature").

Acupuncture was the precursor to Chinese medicine in Europe; it was not until the second half of the 20th century that sources on drug therapy were translated into European languages. Today, TCM is a widely accepted medical healing method in most European countries.
