Champel Cardiology Center
A cardiac assessment allows the functioning of the heart to be checked. Thanks to its regular contractions, the heart pumps blood to all the organs in our body.
In addition, a cardiac assessment is essential for the prevention and diagnosis of heart disease and heart failure.
Several technologies are available to check normal heart function and monitor cardiovascular risk factors that can contribute to heart disease.
An electrocardiogram (ECG) records the electrical activity of the heart, which is necessary for its contractions. To do this, electrodes are placed on the patient's ankles, wrists, and chest. Electrocardiograms (ECGs) are used for various reasons, including preventive health checkups, before surgery, in cases of chest pain, and in cases of certain cardiovascular diseases such as myocardial infarction orhigh blood pressure. This test has the advantage of being non-invasive, risk-free, painless, and fairly quick, taking only fifteen minutes to obtain the trace. The trace then appears on a strip of paper and can be interpreted immediately by the cardiologist.
Cardiac ultrasound is an imaging technique that uses ultrasound waves to allow the cardiologist to visualize heart function, including the ability to contract and the functioning of the heart valves. This technology is essential for the diagnosis of mitral and aortic valvuloplasty and is also increasingly used to detect ischemic heart disease and the consequences ofmyocardial infarction.
A stress test is an electrocardiogram performed during calibrated physical exercise. It is used to screen for coronary artery disease. The stress test, performed on a treadmill or cycle ergometer, aims to assess the heart's ability to adapt to physical exertion. This test ensures that the patient does not have an underlying heart condition or, if present, determines its severity. In practice, during exercise, the heart rate, blood pressure, and electrocardiogram are continuously recorded. Ideally, the test should produce the maximum possible effort, but if an abnormality is detected in any of the monitored parameters, the test can be interrupted at any time.
A Holter monitor is a test that records the electrical activity of the heart for 24 hours. It is used to detect heart rhythm disorders. It can also be used to monitor the effectiveness of medical treatment. This medical test is recommended in cardiology for people with heart disorders such as tachycardia (abnormally high heart rate), bradycardia (abnormally low heart rate), or palpitations. It is sometimes performed in cases of chest pain, shortness of breath, or dizziness.
