The role of justices of the peace is to mediate in civil disputes. The aim of mediation proceedings is to work out an amicable solution with the parties involved, thereby saving them the trouble of going to court.

Justices of the peace are responsible for, among other things:

• Claims arising from private and business relationships

• Labor law disputes

• Distribution of estates, contesting wills

• Maintenance claims

• Neighborhood disputes

At the request of the plaintiff, justices of the peace can act as a single judge and make a final decision on civil disputes up to and including a value in dispute of CHF 2,000.00. Up to a value in dispute of CHF 5,000.00, they can submit a proposed judgment to the parties, which becomes legally binding within 20 days unless one of the parties rejects it.

• Divorce petitions to the District Court of Horgen, Burghaldenstrasse 3, P.O. Box, 8810 Horgen

• Actions for defamation by means of a criminal complaint to the cantonal police

• Disputes between tenants and landlords to the Joint Conciliation Authority for Tenancy Matters, District Court of Horgen, Burghaldenstrasse 3, P.O. Box, 8810 Horgen
