"It doesn't always have to be an implant"
Dental prostheses are generally divided into two groups: fixed prostheses and removable prostheses.
Fixed means that the prosthetic reconstruction is attached in such a way that the patient cannot remove it themselves. These are usually cemented and, less commonly, screw-retained crowns or bridges that are supported only by abutment teeth or implants.
Removable dentures include a variety of prosthetic options, from full dentures to partial dentures. The reconstruction is attached to individual abutment teeth and the missing teeth are replaced so that they protrude above the edentulous section of the jaw. In most cases, this edentulous section is covered with a gum-like pink plastic mask, which is also referred to as a saddle, on which the prosthetic teeth are then attached.
Full dentures rest solely on the mucous membrane of the jaw, with upper dentures also covering the palate. They are held in place by the suction between the denture base and the oral mucosa. In certain cases, a few individual tooth roots with snap fasteners or implants with snap fasteners are used to improve the hold, especially in the lower jaw.
There are a variety of partial dentures available. Partial dentures are secured either with simple wire clasps, high-quality cast clasps, snap fasteners, or attachments on crowns or special double crowns. Here, too, there is a significant price difference depending on whether clasps or crowns are used to anchor the partial denture.
Bleaching is a process used to whiten discolored teeth. Tooth discoloration is caused by
certain eating habits (e.g., drinking tea or coffee), smoking, and medication.
A distinction is also made between external discoloration and internal discoloration (often in teeth that have undergone root canal treatment).
The treatment always requires professional teeth cleaning first. It is also essential to clarify what type of discoloration (external or internal) is involved. It should also be noted that existing fillings do not discolor and may need to be replaced after bleaching.
When bleaching external discoloration, a distinction is made between home bleaching and in-office bleaching. For home bleaching, a custom-fit tray is first made, which then serves as a carrier for the bleaching agent. There are also two types of bleaching agents, either for use during the day or at night, depending on when the tray is to be worn.
The tray can be used multiple times, even after years, as long as no major changes (fillings or crowns) need to be made to the teeth.
With in-office bleaching, the bleaching agent for external discoloration is applied to the teeth in the dentist's office after isolating the gums, and the treatment is complete after about an hour.
For internal discoloration, the root-canal-treated tooth is opened and the bleaching agent is applied to the tooth itself using an insert and sealed with a temporary filling. After a few days, the bleaching agent is removed and a permanent filling is placed.
